臺灣創業投資事業自西元1984年引進至今，歷經30多年經營與發展，募集近2,000億元，投資國內外超過16,000多件投資案，累積投資金額更高達新台幣近3,500億元；總計扶持國內外超過600多家公司進入資本市場（含上市、上櫃及興櫃），對國內早期新創事業及國內整體經濟發展的貢獻厥偉。
1992年4月17日，為提供創投業者一個聯繫的平台，並藉此促進業者之間的交流，由當時登記在台北市的22家創業投資公司所組成之台北市創業投資公會於焉成立，並以服務會員為公會之宗旨。1997年全國創業投資公司的總數為72家，除了設立在台北市內的創業投資公司外，尚有在新竹市登記成立的3家創業投資公司。因此，台北市創業投資商業同業公會為了擴大服務全國業者，乃於1998年向內政部申請改制設立為全國性公會，為全國的創業投資公司提供最佳服務，而成立中華民國創業投資商業同業公會。截至2019年10月，全國營運創投公司家數為268家，總實收資本額約計新臺幣1,615億元。
本會目前已成為全國創投產業的資訊中心，不但提供會員公司國內外相關產業訊息，並定期辦理投資商機媒合會等活動，以介紹潛力案源予會員公司，且已成功為許多創投公司及企業促成合作機會。另外亦協助會員與政府溝通，密切掌握及參與協調投資相關法令的協商，成為雙方溝通的橋樑。
本會自成立迄今已超過20年，在歷任理事長之熱心參與會務，以及秘書長和全體同仁之共同努力下，以服務全體會員為基本精神，努力朝向為全體會員爭取權益及擔任會員與政府協商之橋樑為目標；在各屆理事長帶領下的公會，持續穩健經營並陸續在多個領域交出亮麗的成績單。
本會主要的服務內容，除了促進會員交流聯誼，亦提供下列服務：
✓ 從事國內外創業投資事業之調查、諮詢統計及研究發展事宜。
✓ 協助會員與政府溝通，並密切掌握及參與協調投資相關法令的變動。
✓ 扮演會員與企業間的橋樑，利用定期研討會、說明會，促成投資交流。
✓ 提供投資相關的產業情報，建立國內創投產業專業的投資情報中心。
✓ 增進民間對創業投資事業之了解及參與。
✓ 有關政府經濟政策與商業法令之協助推行及研究建議事項。
✓ 增進民間對創業投資事業之了解及參與。
✓ 促進創業投資業者間之專業知識與投資機會之交流。
✓ 建立會員與會員代表的基本資料及調查與更新產業動態。
✓ 關於同業糾紛之調處事項。
✓ 關於會員或社會公益事業之舉辦事項。
✓ 關於會員合法權益之維護事項。
✓ 關於接受政府機關、團體之委託服務事項。
✓ 依其他法令規定應辦理之事項。
