苏州农业职业技术学院始建于清光绪三十三年（1907年），初名为苏州府官立农业学堂。2001年升格为高等职业技术学院。学院是中国生态文化协会常务理事单位、中国花卉协会理事单位、中国职教研究会农林牧专业协作委员会副主任单位、中国高职研究会教学管理工作委员会副主任单位、中国园艺学会球根花卉专业委员会副会长单位、江苏现代农业校企（园区）合作联盟主办单位、江苏省高教学会副会长单位、江苏省花木协会副理事长单位等。国务院扶贫办农村劳动力转移培训示范基地、农业部苏州培训中心均设在我院。据《园艺志》记载，学院园艺专业始建于1912年，为国内同类学校中最早，学院也因此被誉为中国近现代园艺与园林职业教育的发祥地，曾代表中国政府和江苏省人民政府多次参加国际与国内顶级专业展览并屡创佳绩。
长期以来，学院秉承“励志耕耘，树木树人”的校训，弘扬“勤勉崇农、实干创新”的精神，培养出以观赏园艺教育家章守玉、中科院院士沈善炯、原江苏省常务副省长俞兴德等为代表的近六万名高素质的专业技术与管理人才，为振兴农业、繁荣农村、致富农民，促进地方经济社会发展做出了积极贡献。近几年来，学院坚持服务“三农”和苏州地方经济的办学宗旨，坚持“立足苏州，服务三农，紧扣特色，争创一流”的办学思路，学院各项事业快速发展，首批顺利通过教育部人才培养工作评估，被确定为首批江苏省示范性高等职业院校、江苏省大学生创业教育示范校，先后获得国家、省市各级荣誉30多项，连续四次（2001-2009年）被评为江苏省文明单位。
