苏州热工研究院于2003年7月由原国家电力公司苏州热工研究所转制而成，目前是中国广核集团二级成员公司。
苏州热工研究院的前身是水利电力部苏州核电科学研究所，成立于1978年，其主要任务是跟踪、消化、吸收核电技术，为核电生产运营和工程建设提供服务。
苏州热工研究院目前注册资本金5.1亿元，员工上千名，年收入超过11亿元，设有寿命管理技术中心、再制造与电力安全中心、核安全技术中心、设备监理技术中心、科技信息与培训中心、环境保护与辐射安全中心、设备管理部、系统工程部、技术支持部、运行技术部。下设深圳、宁德、大连、山东分公司，另下辖中广核检测技术有限公司子公司，拥有国家能源核电站寿命评价与管理技术研发(实验)中心、国家核电厂安全及可靠性工程技术研究中心、中广核设备制造工艺评定中心、江苏省企业院士工作站等技术研发平台和博士后科研工作站人才培养平台，建设了电站金属材料寿命评估实验中心、辐射环境实验室、电气设备老化实验室、性能监测与故障诊断实验室、反应堆安全分析独立验证平台等实验平台，目前装备大型实验设备300余台套。
经过三十多年的发展历程，通过对核电和火电技术的研究和广泛实践，苏州热工研究院造就了一支高素质的人才队伍，进入了国家核电科技创新体系，负责和参与了多项国家863、973科研项目、国家科技支撑计划项目、国家自然科学基金项目、国家核电重大专项课题的研究，涌现了一批又一批的科研成果和专利技术，承担了一大批包括国家核安全法规在内的国家核电标准的制订和修订任务，在核电领域具有了较高的知名度和影响力。
2011年，中国广核集团组织机构优化调整后，苏州热工研究院定位为集团核电运营技术平台。苏州热工研究院始终以打造国际一流、国内领先的核电技术研究院为目标，坚定践行集团“三实两基”要求，秉承集团“安全第一、质量第一、追求卓越”的文化理念，继承30多年来的创业传统，坚持以客户为本的市场化服务理念，在集团核电大发展的形势下，苏州院作为二级成员企业，也是技术支持单位，有着广阔的发展空间，后续苏州院将继续围绕打造集团运营技术平台开展核心能力建设，争取为集团机组平稳高效运行做出更大贡献。
