Landman- The Journey A programmer/web designer turned school teacher, life happened and I ran away with the movies. The dispatcher job quickly became a Business Management position. Suddenly I was creating LLCs, adding registered agents, designing efficient business systems, and drowning in more paperwork than I saw as a teacher. I loved it. The camera glow faded so I stopped in South Texas to do a quick website on my way home. Three years on-site and still working for him remotely, I found my true calling. Thanks to that amazing man who started me on the journey and the landmen that helped train me, I found that I liked Landman work (treasure-hunt puzzles) even more than Business Management. A childhood spent helping my genealogy obsessed mother research across the South taught me how to read historical script and language. Her experiences in small town courthouses gave me a great insight into just how many different ways chains of historical documents can be seemingly broken.I now have an almost intuitive ability to find connecting documents regardless of mistakes in naming conventions, inaccurate document references, and filing errors.I combined the expertise of the landmen I met, the requests of the oilman I worked for, and my technology background to create clickable run sheets that open the relevant legal documents. The title opinions cross-hyperlinked to each referenced document within the opinion. I created and printed plats of relevant legal descriptions from patent and added transparent overlays of relevant changes to present. Of course, that was quite time consuming and isn't necessary for most Landman work, but I'm proud of it and so is the man who got me started.I'm still teaching and doing Business Management (a small storage facility), but I'm ready to start concentrating more on landman work.
