For over two years I have now been contracting as a tutor for Land Based Training teaching the NZQA New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3) with strands in Rural Pest Control, Rural Pest Monitoring,, the strategic purpose statement for this qualification reads: “This qualification is intended for individuals who have recently begun working in the pest operations industry or who wish to enter the pest operations industry. It recognises the skills and knowledge of individuals who can carry out pest control operations safely, under limited supervision, and in different environments for the purposes of biosecurity, conservation, and public health and enjoyment. The qualification includes strands that recognise the distinct skills and knowledge required to carry out pest operations in either rural or urban environments.” Facilitating this qualification involves: • Teaching workplace health and safety including the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, job safety analysis, toolbox meetings, basic survival skills and emergency procedures, • Teaching safe quad bike and 4WD use, • Teaching the impacts of pests on our social, economic and environmental values, the history of pests in New Zealand and the Biosecurity Act 1993, • Pest animal and plant identification, physiology and habits, • Workplace communication and data collection, • Pest animal control, monitoring and the Animal Welfare Act 1999, • Pest plant control and monitoring,

For the first seven years of my career, I worked as a Biosecurity Officer at the Northland Regional Council, the experience helped me discover my passion for the environment and interest in environmental solutions.The main objective were:• More Northlanders are supported and enabled to carryout pest control helping our native environment to thrive• Aspirational large scale ‘pest-free Northland’ projects are developed with urban and rural communities• An inter-regional marine pathway plan is in place to reduce the risk of marine pests spreading between regions.The nature of the work has given me the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills and gain experience in a wide range of pest management including: • Advocacy and education of biosecurity to the public at schools, public events and workshops,• Pest animal control and monitoring using pesticide, kill and live-capture traps • Pest plant control and monitoring using herbicide and physical and biological control methods • Marine pest control and monitoring using chemical and physical control methods • Community engagement programmes including Clean Below, Good to go and EnviroSchools, • Digital development projects including the Pest Control Hub and MarinePests.nz, • Warranted under the Biosecurity Act 1993 from the 21st June 2017 - February 2020, • Regulatory enforcement of the Northland Regional Pest Management Strategies 2010 – 2015 and Northland Regional Pest and Marine Pathways Management Plan 2017-2027
