Being a lifeguard is both a mentally demanding position yet a very rewarding experience. You hold many responsibilities in an aquatic environment apart from normal poolside supervision. Apart from being a proactive supervisor I received training which helped me be capable to respond to emergencies utilizing techniques to mitigate and prevent potential harm to other customers. It was my responsibility to maintain pool equipment and ensure that the entire area was presented in a clean manner to ensure a overall positive reception from customers towards the facility.After a year of working as a Lifeguard I received "First In Charge" training which helped me to take on a leadership role among the staff on shift. As the 'FIC' of the shift it was my responsibility to ensure that rotations were on time, to delegate tasks for other lifeguards and to ensure a smooth running shift and facility. Various tasks that were involved as an FIC involved opening and closing the facility, if customers had problems which the lifeguard could not handle they would refer them onto myself to handle. In the case of an emergency it was my job to be the first responder and to ensure the safety of all customers and the well being of staff working at the time.

Being a camp counselor in a different country was quite the culture shock as well as a very rewarding experience for my professional development. I was hired in an area in which I specialized, and my job as a camper counselor involved both being a role model for the younger kids as well as being professional and very thorough in my specialized activity areas. It taught me valuable skills such as being flexible as I was working with a completely different cultures, something which worked for me in New Zealand did not necessarily work in the United States. Apart from those main roles I also participated in various activities around camp to ensure that the kids had the best summer camp experience possible. These involved planning events, helping with some leadership positions in any way I could to ensure things ran very smoothly and without any problems.
