About Tom Jordan

I am passionate about web development and love what I do. I am an innovative & entrepreneurial thinker. This means I never accept the status quo if I think opportunities are being missed or not explored. I get uncomfortable if I am not pushing my own limits, standing still is going backwards in my mind. My current role is Lead Software Engineer but I am searching for a role which allows me to lead innovation teams to generate new and unexplored revenue streams.

As Lead Software Engineer / IT Manager I manage a small team of software developers. I am responsible for liaising with the rest of the company, reaching agreements on IT resourcing, represent IT in the company's management meetings, triage BAU work, manage project sprints, help with spec writing where possible and coach and develop my staff to make sure they were receiving personal development. In addition I created a scheme called Foundry in which the IT department had a day each month to spend time developing themselves. The only criteria being that it had to be learning that benefited them or helped the development of the company. The team would then have the opportunity to present their knowledge to the rest of the department and occasionally higher level company members. In some cases this lead to presentations at board level meetings and developments created directly as a result from Foundry being rolled out company-wide.With my focus on developing staff and streamlining processes I began to run classes to teach various members from all departments SQL to allow them to build themselves simple reports. This dramatically reduced the amount of report requests the team received and allowed the focus to be on complete application development. With regards to my development as a leading role in the management team, following changes at board level which lead to a lack of direction within the management team I took it upon myself to run a strategic planning meeting which allowed us to focus more on the future and make key decisions on areas that needed development in order for goals to be met. I also worked on bringing the team together in order to work more efficiently within our own group level and within our own departments. This lead to us redefining Glide's core values to drive every action we took. Following this I was nominated to chair the management meetings which I strived to make concise, organised and valuable.

My role as Software Engineer at Glide was my first role outside of University. I was part of a small team of 4 developers, we were responsible for maintaining Glide's proprietary Billing, Customer CRM and Finance Systems. These systems were all part of a monolithic MVC PHP application that the business runs on. This system gave me exposure to Doctrine 1.2 Database ORM, Smarty PHP templating Framework, PostgreSQL databases. As well as maintaining Glide's operation systems our team was also responsible for building and maintaining the Corporate Website and customer portals(glide.co.uk). I personally became the main developer on this system and lead much of the development. This website was built using Angular 1.6, Bootstrap and custom Sass CSS3 which communicated to a Symfony API which shared code with the operations application to interact with its database. While I was in this role I implemented a development workflow in our Stock installation of Jira. This helped the team keep track of where tickets were and helped my manager keep track of the work of the team. We also took on agile development methodologies and used Jira's built-in features to track Sprints and Retrospectives. After a number of years I demonstrated my ability to manage and motivate our team including more senior team members. When Glide was bought by Cablecom my manager became Technology Director and I replaced him as IT manager.
  • Netready Limited
    Junior Software Engineer
    Netready Limited 2011 - 2013
The duties that were required in this role evolved over this year long industrial placement. Initially the duties consisted of simple frontend development and supporting other developers in the company. Eventually the duties consisted on leading development of multiple websites and being those clients first port of call in the company for support. I carried out independent scoping meetings with clients and demonstration meetings at the end of the development. I had the opportunity to work on many different types of websites from Web Systems and E-commerce websites to Marketing and Brand websites.
