Linux System Engineer

Pnc

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Us

Patched over 14,000 RED HAT servers with versions; 5.x, 6.x and 7.x to current PNC security standards. Worked with team leads to document this process and convert from a single server patching methodology to a mass script based solution, in order to patch thousands of servers in a single event.Actively assisted in the creation of various bash scripts used to collect information on the targeted Linux servers for patching, as well as staging and completing the associated patch process. This was needed for the mass patching Linux Estate weekends, as that the single server patching process wouldn’t be successful for these associated weekends.Discovered and documented issues as they arose when patching the lowest environments at PNCBank. Our process was to prevent patching any of our production systems into a broken state, as we worked with our customer base to have them test their application(s) before patching production systems.Worked with MIS line of business support teams to patch their Linux production servers in the least impactful way as possible with reboots. This does include various shared infrastructure servers that were patched with reboots during traditional Saturday midnight into Sunday morning “shift”. Supported multiple Production Linux Estate patching weekends between PNC Legacy datacenters and the new “Greenfield” Data Centers. With this model we patched production with reboots from the “inactive” data center first, then active data center (We needed to support multiple teams where they were “active” in the “inactive” data centers keeping the associated patching with reboots to a minimal time frame). This also helped identify teams that would have an outage to better understand their situation, in order to prevent Linux Estate patching from being stopped during the weekend process. Patched production physical and virtual RHEL severs in a forever changing environment.
