When I was about 13, my dad built me a shed in the garden from old wood. Into it I hauled old radiograms and valve TV's, taking them apart to see how they worked. Soon, I had a TV working as a basic oscilloscope.I had always loved electrons. As a child I would connect a battery to a bulb in wonder. Now I was building Hi-Fi amplifiers with the new 'transistors'. IC's followed and by 1971 when I arrived to study BSc (Hons) Electronic Engineering at Bangor University the dawning age of microcomputers and software was upon us.My first job was at ITT components Paignton with a small team working on test equipment for tantalum capacitor manufacturing. Here I honed my knowledge of low level analogue circuitry and gained a love of real-time control and hands-on debugging. By the time the company was wound up 12 years later in 1985 I was head of electronics and software within the UK-wide test equipment group in Great Yarmouth.At Poole I joined a company making and selling test equipment to Eastern European clients. When the Berlin wall came down and their sales dried up I had begun to spread my entrepreneurial wings designing and building a stand-alone Relay Test System against a requirement that I'd picked up on the grapevine.I founded Applied Relay Testing Ltd in 1992, selling to manufacturers in the UK and Europe. Within a few years the we began to penetrate the USA and Chinese markets too. Weathering two major recessions with a cycle of design and development new products followed, pausing only in 2013 for me to relinquish the helm to a long-standing and capable member of the team.Today, I’m not as prolific or as ‘vertically integrated’ as I once was, but I still love the invention, creativity and design that goes into making something useful to an end-user. There is nothing like the buzz that you get from seeing something that you have created working inside another company to help them make widgets, often in other countries too. That feeling will never leave me.
