Ultrasound acoustic energy transfer (UAET) is an emerging contactless energy transfer technology that offers the capability to safely power sensors and devices while eliminating the need to replace batteries, which is of interest in many applications, especially in the biomedical field. To date, the majority of the research on UAET systems has been limited to modeling and proof-of-concept experiments, mostly in the linear regime. Moreover, the existing models do not accurately represent the underlying physics. The linear models neglect the nonlinear effects associated with the nonlinear acoustic wave propagation as well as the receiver's electroelastic nonlinearities on the energy transfer characteristics, which become significant at high source strengths.We addressed the knowledge gaps in terms of linear and nonlinear resonant acoustic-piezoelectric structure interaction effects in UAET systems.
We developed novel design paradigms for superior through-wall wireless energy transfer. Through-wall wireless energy transfer using piezoelectric devices is a technology proposed for charging sensors in enclosed shells or vessels typically found in automobiles, space stations, and nuclear reactors.
