Systems Engineer

I designed and maintained an IV&V test lab to evaluate shipboard security systems. This included designing test fixtures, wiring up control modules, and overseeing the daily operations of the test lab. The complexity was quite high considering the level of complexity of such a large shipboard security system. I designed and developed a cooling system for an enclosed equipment rack. This project started by having the customer complain over having overheating issues with their existing equipment rack (designed by another company). I performed calculations to determine the proper cool air circulation required to bring the internal cabinet temperature down to proper operating levels. Once the proper cfm's were determined, I designated the locations for the cooling hardware and also the control hardware to use for the project. I oversaw the construction and final testing of this modification. The task seemed challenging considering the variables that played a major factor in the design. I designed and modeled a field-ready fiber-optic ethernet infrastructure system which can be deployed in the field to provide troops with fast reliable communications. Part of the design was creating a system that would survive in rugged conditions and be man portable. This included specifying rugged rack mount cases, designing the layout of components, and insuring proper fit and function of the system. Considering the type of design and the conditions in which this would operate, I would consider the complexity to be difficult.

I was personally responsible for designing, prototyping, and supporting new wiring harnesses, switch control panels, and instrument panels for pleasure boats. This position required that I be certified in electrical systems from American Boat and Yachting Council (ABYC) and National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). This engineering position used a lot of electrical skills learned in college and from prior jobs. While working as a project engineer, I was personally responsible for designing and maintaining electrical wiring harnesses, switch panels, and instrument gauge panels. Part of the design process required me to calculate voltage drops, power allowances of electrical branches, circuit protection, and wire gauge determinations for electrical systems. I used autocad software to create metal and plastic panels for mounting breakers, instrument gauges, and switches. Most of the panels I created had very close tolerances and required computer numerical control (CNC) machines to create them. Once a design was completed, I personally oversaw the construction of the prototype and made corrections to the design as needed. All prototypes had to meet strict OEM manufacturer specifications and electrical code standards. If changes were made by the customer after the part was released to production, I would perform a detail analysis to understand the impacts on current production. After the analysis was completed, I would create the proper documentation for the production team to use to make the appropriate changes to the product. The level of complexity of this job was medium-to-high for an engineer. I considered the work to be very challenging and rewarding.
