Franklin Mint brought me back to lead a new venture to expand beyond collectibles into home decor as a separate business. Before the venture got running, the parent company, Warner Communications, sold Franklin to private investors. Positive ROI for the venture was not scheduled until after 24 months. With funding not likely to continue by the new owners, I accepted the above position to head up the US Olympic Coin Program.

I started a new direct response division to diversify an art product manufacturing company. We acquired a mail order business selling 1/12th scale antique furniture kits to monthly subscribers. The business was in a downturn and new customer acquisition and sales were declining. This required that I rapidly develop and test new customer acquisition advertising. The new strategy and creative successfully increased response and reduce customer acquisition cost. Within 24 months, we raised the subscriber level from 100,000 to 150,000, launched a new 48-page catalog and successfully integrated operations. This position was responsible for developing collectable products from a simple concept statement (i.e., A collection of 12 porcelain plates themed on bird art) through all phases of product design, packaging, marketing, advertising, manufacturing and customer fulfillment. The ten marketing directors led the staff designers, engineers, financial planners, in-house advertising agency and all product related operations. A disciplined product development and marketing system allowed sales to grow to $2 Billion (today’s dollars) annually in five years.
