Multimedia artist Katy Parsons was born in 1985 in Southern Indiana. She moved around the country between 2003-2008, attending Savannah College of Art and Design and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, before settling down in Nashville to complete her BFA at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film. After graduating in 2011, she opened The Front Gallery and Studios in what is now known as Wedgewood-Houston, however she was simultaneously sucked into the live music industry in Nashville and quickly became engulfed in the creative opportunities presented in an industry she had not previously considered. From 2012-2018 she worked between Los Angeles, Nashville, and Denver in lighting and video design, audio production, and even started performing herself; Katy is part of the audio visual collaboration MF_TECH - the first Artists-in-Residence at Tennessee State University’s Space for New Media from 2016-2017. In 2019 she completed a MA is Modern Art Theory and Critique from Azusa Pacific University, moved to New Mexico and started designing audiovisual and networking systems for experiential events, museums, and government entities. Her work fuses a traditional practice with digital processes by digitizing and manipulating work virtually or within software. By using high-tech to manipulate low-tech Katy ultimately creates a file based off of a tangible object, then uses an unrelated tangible object to display the file data. A typical piece will go from analog to digital mediums a number of times within the process, resolving to become distorted, low-rez/glitch aesthetic, reminiscent of neoexpressionism. Not only are the final pieces often brought to tangible life on canvas or as projections, but Katy also sells her art as NFT’s (represented by Raw Gallery NFT). Katy was an active member of Untitled Artists, RAW, and Pancakes and Booze, in Nashville, from 2008-2014. She was a live painter in Tennessee for many years, painting on stage with acts like Bassnectar, Skrillex, and Rusko. Katy has also participated in multimedia events where she creates live audio/visuals on projection mapped surfaces. She currently freelances as a VJ, illustrator, and/or experiential designer for the Los Angeles techno community, several independent brands and NFT projects. Her canvas work can be found in private collections in Nashville, Los Angeles, Portland, Cincinnati, Phoenix, and Miami. Her NFT’s have been collected globally and many pieces can be found on the secondary crypto market.
