Logan Shivers is a professional in their field. Colleagues describe them as "It has been a true privilege to call Logan Mangum a colleague! She has served in two different leadership roles for me as a Peer Leader at UNC Charlotte. First, Logan offered her wisdom and experience as a Passport Leader mentoring incoming transfer students. Later, she served as an SOS Peer Mentor offering invaluable support to students experiencing academic difficulty. As an SOS Peer mentor, Logan met weekly with students currently on academic probation at UNC Charlotte – a position she held for two consecutive semesters. The students Logan counseled were academically vulnerable and facing academic suspension. Each week Logan met one-on-one with her mentees in hour-long meetings to discuss their academic progress. While the common thread in these conversations was recovering from recent academic setbacks, the students enrolled in SOS are exceptionally diverse. Each student enters the program with unique experiences, expectations, and needs. As such, each conversation is an opportunity for a mentor to connect in a meaningful way with a student working to recover their academic standing and achieve the goals they have designed for themselves. But of course, each individual experiences their own challenges. Mentees self-report diverse obstacles including a lack of confidence in the academic context or a substantial work commitment or family obligations that compete for the student’s time, but they also share larger barriers including a lack of access to food, shelter, or reliable transportation. Mentoring conversations must adapt to meet the needs to the individual mentee. Logan was exceptional in this role. She actively listened and coached her mentees to support their diverse needs and challenges. Having witnessed first-hand Logan’s mentorship, I can attest to the enthusiasm and heart she brought to her mentoring meetings. This enthusiasm was contagious. Again and again, Logan cultivated a space in these meetings that was conducive for meaningful conversation. The energy and compassion she brought to the space allowed her mentees to feel immediate comfort and security. In Logan, students saw an ally. She provided this vulnerable student population with intentional and reliable support as they worked to achieve their goals and improve their academic standing. Logan is exceptional.
