Students analyse the mechanics of various products to understand how and why they work they ways they do in order to propose new ways of improving their mechanical functionality and longevity. Students are introduced to various process of mass and medium scale manufacture including injection and other processes of moulding plastic products and parts, product electronics, sheet metal fabrication, and casting, machining and finishing. Additionally students will learn about how design decisions can influence the productivity of product manufacture through an approach to design that accounts for the complex logistics of materials specification, part manufacture, assembly, product use, and end of life options such as recycling and dis-assembly. Students will express the specialized technical knowledge acquired through a variety of forms including technical drawings, presentations and reports..
