What is Information Advantage? Information Advantage (IA) must be at the heart of how any large organisation operates if they are to maintain a credible presence, retain staff and exploit the information initiative, and how we achieve influence in a more complex and competitive world. Information Superiority (IS). IS is achieved through efficient and effective Information Management (IM), Information Assurance (IA), Data Protection (DP) and Information Exploitation (IX). Information Hierarchy. A successful governance hierarchy must resource and empower Information Management (IM) Professionals to carry out their role in supporting management of its IAs. IM demands highly motivated and capable specialists ready to take the lead, identify best practice, develop IM ways-of-working and help others to understand why information and records are critical assets. Support comes at all levels, but leadership and commitment from those empowered to provide it is essential and an awareness is needed in realising that IM meets significant resistance, (from everyone), and is therefore the root cause of IM disengagement, ‘Burn-Out’, and high turnover, meaning steps must be taken to ensure this does not happen to the IM Professionals that have stepped up to manage your organisation’s assets. Individual Responsibilities: We all handle information, whether on computers, on paper, or through the spoken word. We need to do it well, keeping within the law and follow the guidelines laid out by our IM professionals. Individuals must:Understand and abide by locally set up processes and procedures as detailed by their IM professionalsUnderstand and handle information in line with any legislative and regulatory responsibilitiesUnderstand the basic principles of good information management as published by their IM ProfessionalKnow where to find published guidance, and how to use it, i.e.: Understand how to carry out: labelling, storing, sharing, protecting, and preserving informationWhen appropriate, make a written record of the knowledge and expertise that you bring to your job, to make it easier or more reliable to share with others, or to ensure that actions or decisions made at the time can be understood in the futurePrepare and store records correctlyUnderstand and follow your IT guidelines and security measuresStay in date with the mandated information trainingReport any risks and areas of concern immediately to your IM ProfessionalHelp colleagues to work effectively with informationKnow your local information staff, and when in doubt, ask!
