Although I’m a chartered accountant, i’m first and foremost a businessman and it is this perspective that has helped me create what Berley has become today.From an early stage in my career, I realised I wasn’t interested in becoming an accountant in a large accountancy practice churning out end of year returns for companies I had no real appreciation for. For me, the fun that must be present in a career if you are to succeed, lie in building a much closer relationship with the firms I sought to help.After qualifying and spending my years working at firms like Norris Gilbert Stern, Auerbach Hope, Gerald Edelman and Casson Beckman, I’d had enough. So with my good friend Jeremy Berman, we both decided to give up well paying jobs and strike out to achieve something we both believed in; helping the more adventurous types of business and business people we’d come across achieve success. I get great satisfaction in getting to know interesting entrepreneurs and dynamic companies looking to grow in ways that may challenge the typical risk averse city accountant. Through a combination of solid business insight and sound understanding of accounting, I’m able to bring 30+ years of experience to exploring ways to grow companies dynamically.In that regard, I consider myself more a businessman that can exercise the experience and judgement of a top London accountant.Contrary to many individuals on LinkedIn, I’m not looking for a new job! I’m just looking to improve the growth prospects of the companies other people work in.I consider my strengths to include:• Building entrepreneurial businesses• Communicating accounting and tax issues to clients in ways that actually mean something to them• Identifying impending business problems and how to avoid them• Helping companies avoid insolvency• Building relationships based on business and not accountingWhen not helping other businesses achieve their goals you can find me out long distance cycling or playing golf.
