As a member of Dow's Supply Chain Innovation team, I worked with domain experts to identify opportunities to solve problems with machine intelligence. My day to day included the development and deployment of machine learning and operations research models, leadership of software development teams, and exploration of new innovation directions. I'm most proud of my work on a graph abstraction layer for Dow's operations, where I carried my own novel ideas from research to proof of concept to company-wide implementation.

Dow's supply chain is a highly complex system of logistics, manufacturing and inventory operations. In my role I focused on the design and improvement of the network view of the supply chain. Working with a variety of stakeholders across the company and across the globe, I acted as an internal consultant, developing combinatorial optimization, machine learning, and simulation models to provide strategic decisions aimed at taming this complex machine.

Continuous improvement is vital to the success of a supply chain management organization. In my first role at Dow I led global improvement efforts to remove bottlenecks in supply chain operations and provided reporting and analytics for ongoing improvement efforts. On day one the business intelligence tools I inherited were confined to disparate and poorly maintained spreadsheets. By the end of my stay, I had leveraged dashboarding tools, SQL databases and code to automate these tasks, significantly improving visibility for the organization.

Boulder, Colorado

The mission assurance group at Ball was working on a business process management workflow that would enable end-to-end coordination from the design of RF components to manufacturing and packaging. To lay the groundwork for this, I closely observed business and operational processes, documenting this information in a very large and multi-layered process map. For grins I printed out the completed map, whose length wrapped entirely around the inner walls of my office.

Greenwich, Connecticut

I took a semester off from college to spend 6 months making Thomas's English Muffins. Our team was focused on implementing Lean manufacturing methods within the Greenwich bakery. I spent my days alternating between collecting English Muffin samples on the bakery floor, collecting data via stopwatch, calipers and a GoPro, and building statistical and optimization models at my desk.

MD Anderson's Performance Improvement organization is a talented group of Industrial Engineers, Data Scientists and domain experts. My summer project was aimed at understanding and eliminating any likelihood of underdosing, overdosing or mis-dosing a patient with chemotherapy drugs. I spent time observing and learning from nurses, doctors and pharmacists to understand how chemotherapy drugs are made and administered. I documented this process, collected data and performed statistical analysis to infer any disconnects in the process. We detected potential for inaccuracies in medical device readings and communication disconnects between staff, and installed a rigorous process for eliminating these issues before they occur.
