I study disasters, environmental crises, and displacement and resettlement. I focus on the anthropology of the state, postcolonialism, cooperation and reciprocity, economic anthropology, organizations and bureaucracy, and the politics of nature, culture, and memory. My most recent book is In the Shadow of Tungurahua: Disaster Politics in Highland Ecuador (Rutgers University Press, 2023, https://tinyurl.com/5n78af9z), which explores the politics of how disasters are made and contested, cooperation in disaster, and the story of a more-than-human lifeworld in the shadow of a grandmother volcano where the people of Penipe are envisioning new futures according to their own cultural logics of the good.In 2017, I developed and edited the special issue of the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology on “Changing Practices of Andean Cooperation and Reciprocity in the Twenty-First Century.” Eric C. Jones and I co-edited the volume, "Social Network Analysis of Disaster Response, Recovery, and Adaptation" (Butterworth-Heinemann 2017). In 2016, I edited the special issue of The Annals of Anthropological Practice on “Continuity and Change in the Applied Anthropology of Risk, Hazards, and Disaster.” I worked with Roberto E. Barrios to develop and edit the 2015 special issue of Human Organization on “The Applied Anthropology of Disasters.”
