About Ann Williams

Ever since I first began studying chemistry, analytical instrumentation has always been the subsection that garnered my interest. I am fascinated by the complexity of instrumentation and how it can be harnessed to analyze the surrounding world. Additionally, specializing in instrumentation and its utilization allows me to constantly grow my technical knowledge, frequently challenges my ability to problem solve, and requires my constant growth to keep up with new methods and technology. In my career so far, I have been lucky enough to have 3 roles that have allowed me to work with different instrumentation and showcase my technical knowledge, problem solving skills, and ability to grow with the field. First, I spent 3 years in grad school working with a fully home built instrument that required constant maintenance. Utilization of our highly specialized technique, allowed me to conduct a project to identify cacao residue in ancient Mayan pottery with a newly developed analytical methodology. Next, I was the Mass Spectrometry Facility Manager for ~6 months where I got a lot of experience characterizing small molecules and peptides with GC-MS and ESI-HPLC-MS. Finally, I spent 2 years at Intel working with EUV Lithography Scanners, widely considered to be the most complex instruments in existence. The use of EUV scanners in microchip processing relies on nanometer level precision. This level of precision required constant data analysis by me of both instrument and product health. As I progress in my career, I hope to have further opportunities to work with new types of instrumentation. Opportunities that will grow my technical knowledge and expose me to new applications.

This role truly allowed me to demonstrate my technical expertise, my ability to analyze data to ensure good quality and productivity, and my drive to improve structural systems and methodologies. The EUV lithography scanners that I worked with are some of the most complex instruments in existence. I started this role with no prior knowledge but was able to quickly achieve the necessary technical knowledge. Most of my time was spent in data analysis to monitor the tool health as well as developing new methods to extract data and analyze it to better track our tool health and the quality of our product. As tool issues arise, I collaborated with vendor experts to understand the issue, develop next steps and ensure a quick resolution. I had the privilege to be part of a relatively new team that comprised roughly 10 people and was thus able to help shape the development of this group through multiple high impact projects that improved our area productivity and minimized our quality risk. One of my most impactful projects was working with a team of 4 people to develop 30 + operating procedures for critical job duties, which increased our productivity and decreased our quality risk. Another impactful project that I worked with was the creation and implementation of a system to track the requalification of our scanners after repairs were completed. For this, 10+ requalification templates were created, as well as a system that will be used long term to track the time each re-qualification takes, and 20+ operational changes were made over the course of multiple quarters to reduce the time re-qualification takes. I worked on multiple projects with other grad students studying nucleobases. Through our research, we hoped to understand the prebiotic selection factors in an early earth that would've caused the canonical bases to be chosen over structurally similar derivatives. We have postulated that the canonical bases have faster excited state decay times that make them more photochemically stable than their alternatives. In one study, we used the spectroscopy techniques of resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization, pump-probe, and double resonance spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of the excited state of 2,4 diaminopurine. The project that I am proudest of used our technique as an analytical method to quantify theobromine, theophylline, and caffeine in Mayan pottery samples. I conducted all sample analysis and analytical method development for this project done in conjunction with Dr. Anabel Ford who provided the archeological analysis of the analytical results. While organic residue analysis is a well developed field of study, our instrumentation was a completely new analytical technique and required much method validation. I was able to validate that our instrumentation provided better separation and a 10x improved LOD. Show less
