Helped students learn in core educational subjects, including math, science, reading/vocabulary, social studies and the arts. Sakegawa Village, Japan

Through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, one of the world's largest and longest-running international exchange programs, I was employed as an Assistant Language Teacher by the Sakegawa Village Board of Education. I team-taught English alongside Japanese teachers of English, visiting multiple public schools from preschool to junior high level.I was involved in designing lesson plans and activities for students across all these levels, leading community activities such as village Christmas and Halloween festivals, and coaching students for English speech contests. I also organized various presentations and workshops for other ALTs and Japanese teachers. I presented at the 2011 Yamagata New JET Orientation and the 2012 Skills Development Seminar.

Sonoma State University

As a Sonoma State FIG Program Peer Advisers, I served as a mentor to a group of twenty five first year students. This included co-teaching a specialized section of University 102 in the fall. This course focused on college transitional issues and topics in Global Issues. During the Spring semester, I solo taught a one unit course focusing on the same material. My duties also included planning and leading class field trips, organizing events with faculty members, advising students on their courses for the next year, and helping students to identify and utilize university resources.

As a Team Supervisor with Project ReGeneration, it was my responsibility to supervise a team of ten children, aged nine to thirteen. Our duties for the day would include transporting the children to our work location, organizing the children into teams, and encouraging and guiding them in the best way to get the job done. Our work days ranged from invasive plant removal to mulch and compost creation. One of my other main duties was to facilitate educational activities to promote environmental education and to enable the children to better appreciate the impact that their work had on their community, and on the world.

Community Service Advisors (CSAs) are responsible for mentoring, advising, and setting boundaries with students who live in the Residential Community. I was trained to respond to emergencies, make referrals to appropriate campus resources, provide monthly educational and social activities, uphold Residential Community standards and policies, and build communities of respect and caring within a diverse group of individuals. I was also expected to fulfill on-call weekend and weekday duty, service desk coverage, weekly staff meetings, weekly in-service training, weekly supervision meetings, and be a campus leader and role model. The CSA position is a full year, live on-campus commitment.
