About Abraham Tseng

My name is Abraham Tseng, and I am a technical game designer with years of experience as a tools and pipeline tech artist in both games and animated films. As a technical game designer, I've been able to leverage my background to aid me in rapid prototyping, tool creation, and aid me in cross-discipline communication with engineering, art, and production. In my time at Riot, I worked on Arena, ARAM Preseason, Ultimate Spellbook, Nexus Blitz, URF, and OFA. I was the primary designer on Arena's combat levels, and introduced new terrain types and gameplay objectives to the mode. I was also one of our subject matter experts for our map creation toolkit, and acted as a consultant on our new creature creation and grayboxing features.In my time in animation, I worked on all the WDAS animated films from Big Hero 6 to Encanto, and supported 3D artists of almost every discipline, but with a particular focus on Animation, Lighting, and Render Optimization. Highlights of my time there include obtaining a patent for an automated render culling system that is still in use today and co-creating Geppetto, a Maya graph editor animation curve editing suite of tools.

As a technical game designer on the LoL Game Modes team, I got the chance to work on Ultimate Spellbook, ARAM's 2022 pre-season update, and designed the map layouts, juices, and introduced the deep water terrain type to LoL and created the Power Flower for Arena. I was also the sole game designer for the Nexus Blitz 2023 revival and the 2024 URF Lunar New Year release. On the technical side of things, I served as our Subject Matter Expert for map editing, acting as consultant on several tool updates, including grayboxing and character creation. I also did engineering work to update the Event UI to modern standards for Nexus Blitz. For Arena, I helped pioneer the use of our map-within-a-map system that had previously only been used in TFT and used it to set up the different game arenas.

As tactics supervisor, I led a 4 man team whose goal was to look for inefficiencies within our film making process and search for holistic solutions, as well as to monitor render times and identify any potential outliers. This process was a studio wide collaborative process, and led to the creation of a tool that connected ShotGrid data to our final images to allow artists more convenient access to their shot status, using stereo masks to reduce the amount needed for stereo renders, drastically reducing render times for applicable shots (saving up to 90% of render time in extreme cases), new tech check processes for character asset review that reduced errors downstream, and more.

As a technical director at Disney Animation, I primarily supported our lighting, crowds, and animation departments, and became one of our department experts on render optimization. Some of my highlights from this period include the creation of an autoculling tool that continues to be run on every movie since Big Hero 6, saving us countless hours of render time, a shader plugin that allowed us to animate region gradients in our renderer, and co-created a graph editor Maya plugin called Geppetto that gave animators the ability to do key cleanup, and manipulate multiple keys across multiple selected curves at a time.
