During my time at ECMWF I implemented a number of major changes to the IT infrastructure including a significant move to cloud based services allowing my team to concentrate on the core activities of HPC and large scale data storage.I was heavily involved in planning the relocation of the ECMWF data centre from Shinfield Park to Bologna as well as developing the ECMWF IT strategy for the period 2019 - 2029I also undertook a cultural change process within the Department to embed ITSM and ISO27001 concepts within ECMWF operations.My Department comprised 60 staff and provided computational services to the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts together with external users from member states. My responsibilities covered HPC, networks, IT security, servers, desk tops, enterprise software applications, large data archives (over 240PB) as well as functions such as telephony. I was responsible for ensuring availability of all systems for time critical applications.

I played a major role in the establishment and development of the Hartree Centre. The Hartree Centre was funded by a £37.5M capital grant from the UK Government and was established as a fifth division within my Department with the Director of the Hartree Centre reported to me. I also secured a £19M capital investment into the Department for Energy Efficient Computing. I was a member of the Daresbury Senior Management Team and STFC’s Operations Board. I was also a member of the ScaleMP Advisory Council (ScMP-AC) and the STFC Computer Advisory Panel.I led on the development of strategic interactions with Industry, Academia, Research Councils and International Laboratories and set Strategy and Direction for the Department. I was responsible for managing the Scientific Computing Department that totaled over 190 staff split between the Daresbury and Rutherford Laboratories and operated on a budget close to £20M per annum. The Department was formed by a merger of STFC's Computational Science and Engineering and e-Science Departments into a single new Department. I therefore undertook a major Culture Change Project within the new Department.

As Associate Director of the Computational Science and Engineering Department I played a key role developing the proposal for the Hartree Centre project which secured £37.5M capital funding from Government. I was responsible for management of the department’s interactions with the Research Councils and PSREs as well as leading the department’s materials simulation and life science activities. I developed the Department’s key strategic interactions with the University Sector. I also developed key strategic interactions with major blue chips. I was responsible for managing the Department’s Service Level Agreement with the EPSRC which generated £2.4M income per annum. I was a member of the Daresbury Senior Management Team.

I obtained EU funding to establish the Synchrotron Radiation Research Theory Network and the follow on project called the Light Source Theory Network. These activities linked together theoretical activities at major European experimental facilities. I was responsible for the management of the CCP3 programme and also performed research on surface science and methods for the interpretation of experimental data.

I was a member of the Computational Materials Group with responsibility for supporting the CCP3 programme bringing together UK research groups working on surface science. I perofrmed core research on surface science and methods for the interpretation of experimental data.

I was an active research scientist working on my core research topics of methods for the interpretation of experimental data and first principles simulation of materials. I also helped with undergraduate admissions and small group teaching for the College.

I was a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge. I served as Director of Studies in Natural Sciences for the College with responsibility for advising undergraduates on subject choices, undergraduate admissions and small group teaching. I was a member of the College Governing Council.

With Professor Sir David King and Professor Richard Lambert we obtained the largest grant ever awarded my the Physical Chemistry panel at EPSRC for fundamental studies of surfaces.I was a lecturer within the Department of Chemistry. My core research explored Low Energy Electron Diffraction and work on total energy simulations of surfaces. I worked closely with the experimental research groups of Professor Sir David King and Professor Richard Lambert.

I was employed within the group of Professor Sir David King as a theoretical expert on the analysis of Low Energy Electron Diffraction Data. I worked closely with the experimental group to analyse and characterise a number of important gas-surface interactions.

I was award a NATO Fellowship which I held at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, California working with Dr Michel Van Hove within the group of Professor Gabor Somorjai. My work involved the development of methods for the interpretation of Low Energy Diffraction (LEED) Data. This lead to the first general release of a code utilising Tensor LEED – the automated tensor LEED code (ATLEED).
