    I joined Mesosphere at an early stage, ~30 people. My titles were Product Manager and Engineering Manager, but I wore many hats as we developed the company.Engineering: I helped to define our engineering org. I set up our Scrum process, wiki, issue tracking, incident management and support processes. Defining the culture - dogfooding, ownership, focus on results - was really rewarding.In my EM capacity I managed 15 engineers across SF, Portland, Hamburg and Berlin.Shipping: I’ll never forget managing the company’s first product release, DC/OS 1.0. I managed six Early Access releases and shipped our final build to hit the exact launch date (June 9, 2015). I worked on DC/OS through to release 1.8.Marketing: I represented the company at Andreesen Horowitz Executive Briefings, and at the Kubernetes Launch event hosted by Google. With the team, I also shipped the landmark demo at MesosCon launching 50,000 containers in 72 seconds; a complex technical feat.Product: I was the first Product Manager hire. Leveraging my background, I created Personas representing our enterprise customers and drove our use of User Stories.As well as working on DC/OS I was Product Manager for critical DC/OS services: Cassandra, Kubernetes, Swarm, Chronos and Marathon.I wrote the DC/OS Service Specification, enabling the first wave of partner services (ArangoDB, MemSQL, CrateDB).I worked with Aphyr on his ‘Call Me Maybe’ Jepsen article for Chronos. In 2016 I designed DC/OS Jobs to replace Chronos, working with customers and translating their needs into product. I was responsible for Marathon becoming the developer interface of DC/OS.Industry: I represented Mesosphere on the Governing Boards of both the CNCF and OCI - the two driving forces of cloud native container technology.

The scope included everything from low-level datacenter design to high-level development UX.I was hired to own Software, while my co-lead owned Hardware. Our remit was to migrate the company from a purely private shop to Hybrid Cloud.With a team of three architects, I researched PaaS & SaaS and synthesized trends. Major tech included:- PaaS: Docker, Mesos, Cloud Foundry, Apcera Continuum, Redhat OpenShift, Apprenda, Netflix OSS- IaaS: OpenStack, CloudStack, Eucalyptus, Google Compute Engine, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft AzureWe consulted with engineers at Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft Azure, Docker and many cloud leaders to help define our strategy.From our research I defined a reference architecture for JPMC Cloud, identifying the components we needed before making technology choices. I set the plan for further research and implementation. This project is ongoing at JPMC.

    In 2013 JPMC launched a project to rebuild our flagship site - http://chase.com - using modern techniques. A Strike Force of six was chosen to create the reference architecture.As Infrastructure Lead, my responsibilities were to:1. Co-lead on a radically improved architecture, breaking up the existing monolith application. On one scalability axis we segmented over 70 million users. On another axis we split the business functions into logical & physical ‘swimlanes’ for fault tolerance.2. Create the hardware design, selecting the spec of servers, deciding capacity numbers and rack layout.3. Select the web stack and the deployment model (no hypervisors).4. Advise on other needs. I introduced Cassandra for unstructured log data.5. Estimate resources and timeline and calculate the overall cost of the project.This project is ongoing at JPMC.

    In 2012 I was hired to lead Web & App Technology in JPMC.I set the strategy - globally, firmwide - across a broad portfolio including PaaS, development (Java & .NET), Web and JEE tech, Continuous Delivery and deployment automation.I led a group of forty-five engineers and architects. Major efforts:1. Tech Integration. I worked with our businesses to stop 'product sprawl' and reduce needless variation in technology (e.g. the licensing of many different JEE servers).2. Private cloud PaaS. I continued to migrate JPMC developers to self-service deployment. In 2013 the Asset Management business declared my PaaS as their mandatory hosting platform. We succeeded largely by internal word-of-mouth: PaaS gave our business a game-changing time to market, and developers loved working with a modern service.3. Web Deployment Patterns. Our infrastructure delivery was crippled by the fact that every server request was bespoke ('All pets, no cattle.'). Every deployment required consultation and custom config. To fix this we worked with the business to create a fixed set of hardware/software patterns for all scenarios - including the challenge of externally-facing stacks in the DMZ. By enforcing their use and running a tight feedback loop for corrections, we dramatically reduced app deployment times.4. Continuous Delivery (CD). JPMC developers wanted to do 'the right thing' - CI and CD - but were frustrated by the lack of infrastructure. We commoditised a set of products and integrated them into a seamless 'CD as a Service' pipeline: Jenkins, Rundeck, Selenium Grid, Nexus, SonarQube.In May 2013 I was named Distinguished Engineer, JPMC's highest award. There are 22 DEs among 25,000 technologists.

    After five years spent transforming integration, I shifted domains. Our HPC group had a prototype hosting platform, and I was hired to evolve and transform it into a global service.I managed four core engineers and ran an Operations team of ten.I conducted the project as a startup, responsible for all aspects of making the service a success: product management, technical strategy, release management, evangelism, community building and running Ops.The custom PaaS stack ran Apache HTTP, Redhat mod_cluster, Tomcat and IBM Symphony. I avoided hypervisor tech in favour of containers, using Linux CPU affinity and JVMs on Redhat 5 to approximate the container tech of today.The platform is core to JPMC's business with >3,000 applications deployed in seven datacenters. Over 500 developer teams are registered to deploy.In 2012-13 I extended the platform to provide both PostgreSQL and Cassandra as-a-Service, both first-of-a-kind services in the firm.In 2013 I partnered with a PaaS vendor, Apprenda to converge the Java and NET capabilities, and transition to an outsourced engineering model.

    The ESB project I led secured a $5million budget to become a central service for the global Investment Bank. I accepted a permanent VP position at JPMC to become the Technical Architect.Over a five year period, my team developed the prototype into the Message Bus, JPMC's firmwide integration platform that runs today.I designed a resilient, global architecture with multi-tiered failover for Oracle and MQ in three regions. The infrastructure was expanded to twelve RHEL 4 application servers and twelve Oracle 10g RAC servers, four each in New York, London and Singapore.My multi-region messaging design supported 10s of millions of messages per day. Later, we carried out the first major migration from MQ to the AMQP-based product, Apache Qpid.I created processes for onboarding, Ops, developer support and release management. A dedicated team was put to work evangelising and educating developers on the new integration model.In February 2006 I became Integration Architect for the Investment Bank. I was responsible for the adoption of Mule across JPMC, negotiating an Enterprise Licensing Agreement with MuleSoft and creating the Message Adapter Framework (MAF), a suite of recipes and tools to get developers productive faster.Ultimately the Message Bus and MAF were made strategic and moved to Firmwide Engineering & Architecture. I became the Integration Services Architect responsible for all JPMC lines of business.
