As the sole administration-focused Research Officer at the ANU Institute for Communication in Health Care (ICH), I have had primary responsibility for my Director’s and the Institute’s administrative requirements for two years. The core duties of this role are: financial, including budgeting, acquittals, payments and reporting; operational, including event planning, meeting preparation and chairing, calendar and email management, website management, and booking travel and accommodation; and relational, including forging and maintaining relationships both internally to the ANU and with external collaborators, stakeholders and audiences. In this role, as well as in my past capacities as a festival producer and magazine and book editor, I have worked with and coordinated considerable numbers of people from diverse backgrounds across multi-faceted, changeable projects and events.

Drawing on my background in medical anthropology, I worked to guide students of biomedicine through their problem-based learning tutorials, enhancing their clinical and interpersonal skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Working with the Social Foundations of Medicine team, I supported qualitative research projects, including by writing ethics applications, literature reviews, proofreading and editing, project design, conducting interviews and focus groups, analysing data and organising professional workshops for projects on: domestic and family violence, illicit drug use and women’s health. I also worked with academic staff in the Medical School to mark graduate and post-graduate assignments in public health and medicine.

I worked with members of the CSI at UNSW to conduct Freedom of Information request-based research into gendered disparities in pay and promotion in the Australian university sector, including performing extensive exploratory research, writing literature reviews, writing and filing Freedom of Information requests, and analysing data received in response to these requests.

Homer is a website dedicated to discussing masculinities and challenging the idea of what it means to be a man. In my capacity as the site's founding editor, I oversaw the site's creation, design and creative direction, pioneering a podcast and publishing work by more than fifty writers.

In this role I edited research papers for publication in academic journals, including performing supplementary research, and produce annotated bibliographies. Areas of research included: resource exploitation in the Global South; livelihood diversification and seasonal-migratory female workers in India; and capitalist consumerism and the politicisation of menstruation in the Third World.

Responsibilities at YWCA Canberra included writing, editing and designing a number of marketing and communications materials, including but not limited to a quarterly news bulletin, daily social media posts and weekly e-newsletters across a variety of topics. It was a pleasure to work for an organisation with the YWCA's values of gender equity, community support and advocacy.

Noted was a Canberra writers festival with a focus on equality, diversity, social responsibility, inclusiveness and professional development. I served as media spokesperson, producing content and providing interviews for local and national media outlets. I grew online audiences through targeting and cross-promotional posting, and developed events, including choosing and approaching artists. I also liaised with corporate sponsors, local government and festival partners to secure funding, venues and permissions.

As in-house editor for Pan Macmillan Australia's digital imprint Momentum Books, I project edited all titles from submission to publication. This included coordinating freelance proofreaders, copyeditors and typesetters, and corresponding with and answering the concerns of the many authors with which the imprint had open book deals.

The role of Editor at a publication with as tight a nucleus as BMA Magazine involves a vast array of skills – InDesign, Photoshop and the MS Office package, for example. For each fortnightly issue, I was required to evaluate, source, manage and coordinate with interview candidates, writers, photographers, designers and public relations consultants both nationally and internationally.
