Joining the New Fellows Committee, RACGP, Victoria has been a wonderful way to understanding the role of the RACGP and the responsibilities that it endures for its members. Looking forward to a greater role in future, to help make Australian GP’s the best in the world and the first person everyone turns to for help in their respective communities.

One of the most challenging and yet interesting jobs to date. I was concerned that becoming a full-time GP after years of hospital based Emergency, Intensive, Surgical, Medical and Cardiac care would leave me for want. However the complexities of being a GP are far more challenging and rewarding than I could have ever anticipated before.

Twice a week medical students from JCU would shadow me for 3 hours at a time up to 6 hours on some days. Teaching them real life clinical skills, from history taking, examinations, making a differential diagnosis and management plan were key elements. Essentially continuing what they have learnt in Year 4 and putting it into practice.

Tutoring year 4 medical students was immensely gratifying. I ran classes weekly or twice a week, going through case presentation, teaching clinical medicine and mentoring year 4 medical students.

I was selected to work at Sri Lanka's premier private hospital in May 2006 and began work in the Emergency Department. After a year I was offered the position of Medical Registrar in internal medicine, which I successfully undertook for six months, and was then invited, back to the Emergency Department as Senior Medical Officer. As one of 4 senior doctors, I worked in the Emergency OPD which entailed GP/family medicine and counselling. In addition to my work at the Emergency Department, I was also did regular locum work in the operating theater, assisting in general, orthopaedic and neuro-surgical, and was one of only two junior doctors on the renal transplant surgical team. My work frequently involved transporting and treating patients in both land ambulance and air ambulance services between hospitals. I was also one of the doctors responsible for the training of Junior doctors and Nursing staff in CPR/BLS, and was selected to lecture in a program aimed at training Nursing Staff in BLS.
