Reception:- I unpack specimens from hospital theatres, GP clinics, and private hospitals, triage them based on urgency and size;- I book specimens into our system;- I handle phone calls from doctors, secretaries, and other staff members;- I deal with any issues involving specimens and package containers as requested by specific clinics. Dissection:- I prepare the workbenches by cleaning the benches, blading up the scalpels and feather blades, ensuring the inks we use are topped up, disposing of any empty formalin pots from the previous week, and unpin specimens from corkboards that have been fixing in formalin overnight;- I scribe for our Biomedical Scientists and consultant histopathologists; - I assist with printing more cassettes and updating the system accurately;- I dispose of specimens that are ready to be incinerated;- I carry out the weekly laboratory equipment order, ready for the next week;- I also move bigger specimens booked prior into the current day's trays, ready for the Biomedical Scientists and consultant histopathologists to dissect. - I prepare formic acid, and acetic acid (if required).Main Laboratory:- I carry out advanced-level paraffin wax tissue embedding;- I carry out microtomy (specimens that require full face sections, 3 levels, and mega blocks);- I run the automatic H&E stainer and glass cover-slipper;- I assist with slide matching with the blocks and forms;- I do the chemical runs (xylene, formalin, IMS alcohol, acid alcohol, alcoholic eosin, and haematoxylin) and the waste chemical runs;- I find blocks and slides and file them away when necessary; - I assist with machine maintenance, which involves changing reagents to ensure the machines work optimally.
