About Aakash B.
I’m currently enrolled in the Master of Architecture RIBA Part II programme at The University of Sheffield. I completed my bachelor’s in architecture from the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT University) at Ahmedabad, India. I have gained over two years of valuable professional experience working at Tense Architecture Network at Athens, vir.mueller architects at New Delhi on projects of various scales and typologies from the conceptual phase to development of design to producing construction drawings and site administration. I believe that our architectural vocabulary should be rooted in the vision of developing local economies through our material cultures.

Research Assistant
I worked as a research assistant to Prof. Anthony Powis on the Educating Uncertainty project, which is a research project concerned with the relationship between ongoing rapid changes in the disciplines of architecture and landscape (in the face of climate breakdown, decolonisation, and other global challenges), and the concurrent rapid changes in higher education. What is it like being a student at this time, with the whole edifice of architecture school shifting around you just as you try to navigate it? How do students perceive the ways in which their own education is changing—from year to year, from the beginning to the end of their courses, and when returning as postgraduates? This year’s first-year intake will, at the very earliest, become architects in 2030. What will architectural practice look like then? How are the ways in which we teach not only preparing them, but acknowledging that we may not fully know the answer to these questions? To begin to answer these questions, we will undertake focus groups and other engagements with students to better understand their perceptions and expectations regarding the rapid changes in architectural education in the face of climate breakdown—both at the School of Architecture & Landscape and more widely. This will help to support both curriculum development and further research on the teaching and practice of architecture and landscape for uncertain futures.
Research Assistant
I assisted Prof. Emre Akbil to create a Climate Initiatives Database. The role involved online research, resourcing, and contacting climate action groups (such as members of the South Yorkshire Climate Alliance) to build a database of climate initiatives. Good knowledge of climate literacy (e.g. engagement in climate action group(s), climate related projects), research and data gathering skills, as well as creative visualisation skills were required. Also good competence in organising data in spreadsheets (e.g. to build a database of initiatives) were useful skills for this role.
