Aaminah Shakur (they/them) is an artist, art historian, culture critic, editor, intuitive, poet, and writer. Their visual artwork is primarily mixed media that combines collage, painting, and traditional craft such as embroidery, beadwork, and other fiber arts. They are particularly interested in the preservation of traditions and so-called craft that are often gendered and racialized. Their work explores the hybridity of traditional methods and materials with futurist methods and materials that represent the cultural practice of remembering history and carrying it forward into the future. Additionally, Shakur is deeply invested in addressing how art spaces, art writing, and art conversations can be designed to be accessible in terms of disability and fatness, and inclusive of community members who have been historically erased or appropriated from and continue to be neglected or excluded. Shakur graduated with a B.S. in Art History and minor in Museum Studies in May 2019 and a certificate in Visual & Critical Studies in August 2021 from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, MI.Shakur's intuitive services work is based on empowering the individual and helping them find the strength, tools, and answers they already possess inside themselves while also connecting them to relevant external resources and support. Intuitive services begin with oracle or tarot card readings or water gazings, but are often in-depth conversations that can also include dream interpretation, development of personalized rituals, and grief work.Shakur currently serves as the Accessibility Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Pride Center, providing contracted services centering a disability justice framework to ensure the local LGBTQ+ community is served and provided with accessible services by GRPC. Shakur is available for consulting services on how accessibility and disability issues, including sensitivity readings, image descriptions, accessibility assessments, and more.
