Analyst Programmer
Worked in a small team with three analyst programmers. Supported many internal and external systems owned by the museum including the museum intranet and website mainly working with C#. Readied up Windows servers for web and console applications i.e. installing IIS manager and required .NET frameworks, registering required GAC assemblies, setting up scheduled jobs. With limited knowledge from stakeholders and other operational staff, was able to collate as much information from old documentation and source code in order to test all the applications that would be affected, during the replacement of a major third-party software. Tested and modified each of the applications to ensure their compatibility with the new third-party API. Wrote PowerShell scripts to automate the running of certain processes including writing a script to FTP a file which was setup to run on a daily basis. Was involved in the whole lifecycle of many projects, taking the lead on the development, talking with stakeholders, setting requirements, designing software, testing, writing documentation and creating change control documents. Redesigned a legacy software to follow SOLID principles. Used unity as the container for IoC. Used selenium to automate some front-end testing on a web application. Created SQL scripts, packages (SSIS) and batch jobs. Created several console applications used to integrate third-party software to other software used by the museum both internal and third party. Supervised and mentored a junior analyst programmer and familiarised them with the systems used and supported within the museum. Collated information and created 'how to' documentation to aid first line support and other members of my team, in solving queries.
Developer
As my first position after graduating university, I started off as a bug fixer. This role required me to step through the code to find bugs that had been reported by customers and rectify them in the most effective manner. A lot of my work required heavy testing on my part to ensure the bug had been fixed without causing undesirable effects on the systems functionality and performance. After a few months I graduated to a junior developer role, where I worked with a scrum team of 6 with the goal of converting the code of our existing desktop software to use more advanced technology. Although this project was later abandoned, the company appreciated my dedication and work to the project and I was given an ‘Outstanding contribution’ award and progressed to a developer role. My later projects involved transferring the functionality within the desktop software to a web platform. During these projects I was able to work more closely with testers and more senior developers, which helped me in producing much better quality code.
Operational Researcher
For my placement year in university, I worked with the Department of Health as an operational researcher. I was asked to find out reasons why the performance of a group of dental practices was changing. This required many problem-solving techniques, which included the use of correlation coefficients, scatter plots and regression analysis. I used Microsoft excel mostly for my analysis and Microsoft access to store and retrieve the data. I also had to liaise with other people from both my team and other departments, to ensure my interpretation of the data sets was correct and relevant. Once I completed my analysis, I presented my findings in a report using narrative and tables; making sure the language was clear and concise. I also attended many workshop and training events to expand my knowledge of techniques to use within the project as well as to develop myself to better work with other people.
