I conducted a research project at a leading institute in Jakarta (i3L). The study consisted of "measuring the rate of degradability of polystyrene and polyethene in Hong Kong mealworms". It took place over a 4 month time period and results demonstrated that these mealworms gut bacteria have specific enzymes that are capable of breaking down polystyrene and polyethene products at a faster rate than industrial systems. Hence, if mealworms can be ethically used at a larger scale, the global waste levels would significantly see a drop.The internship combined real-life work problems along with practical lab simulations and hence developed your problem-solving skills. Also, it enhanced my adaptability skills as I needed to constantly shift from working in a team to working individually depending on the learning outcome of the day. Lastly, completing the internship heightened my sense of responsibility and accountability for what decisions I made and how I executed the tasks I was presented with.
