About Aaron Avery
I am a passionate educational leader that delivers opportunities for diverse learners to expand and refine their skillset. Throughout my career, I have led students and adults as a secondary instructional coach, summer school dean, online instructional dean, classroom teacher, social studies department chair, and athletic coach. Each of these roles has allowed me to create empowering growth opportunities for the people that I served. In my role as a Secondary Instructional Coach, I have had the challenging and rewarding opportunity to develop professional learning opportunities for individual teachers that are customized to their particular needs. The ability to do this required me to leverage strong interpersonal skills in order to build trust while helping teachers to set goals and to develop a path to meet them. My success in each endeavor was measured by student-learning related outcomes that served as evidence of growth. The ability to serve teachers of across the secondary curriculum is evidence of my strong interpersonal skills, flexible mindset, and belief that everyone, regardless of tenure, has room to improve.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions had to quickly adapt to meet the needs of learners. As part of this effort, I served as the Dean of Instruction for Lakers Online School and as the Summer School Dean for the West Bloomfield Schools Summer School Reimagined Program. Both of these programs required me to rely on strong organizational, creativity, planning, and communication skills. The process of launching online learning and summer programs was challenging, but ultimately successful. Through Lakers Online, we were able to serve 1,500 families through remote learning and the high school summer program provided over 1,000 students the ability to grow personally while recovering lost credit over the course of two summers. I am tremendously proud of these programs and believe that they serve as evidence of my resilience and commitment to success.I have thrived as an educational professional by making it a priority to build strong relationships and provide a service in which both students and colleagues find relevant and valuable. My accomplishments demonstrate that I can implement and coordinate a wide variety of programs for a diverse population of learners. Furthermore, when additional learning is necessary, I have shown that I am willing to work quickly to gain that knowledge. As I look to the future, I am excited to continue my journey as I seek to find continued growth in new professional opportunities.

My responsibilities consist of working with the social studies PLC to develop and implement problem-based geography lessons for 6th-8th graders learners. Our goal in each unit is to equip the learners with the ability to use data and other relevant information to evaluate scenarios related to geography, collaborate in order to make conclusions about each situation, and then develop solutions to relevant problems. Each lesson is carefully scaffolded while keeping differentiation, learning outcomes, student engagement, and measures of success in mind. Additionally, I am responsible for building and maintaining a positive learning environment for five periods of students, ranging in age from 11-14 years old. Doing so requires the creation of strong relationships, clear expectations, and daily routines. Administrative tasks such as attendance, communication with families, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records, and tracking the implementation of special education accommodations are a part of every class period as well. A further enhancement to the middle school day is an advisory period that takes place in the morning and afternoon. This period is used for a variety of tasks related to social and emotional learning and academic support. Each week I teach a lesson on mental health, communicate with students about grades, and conduct sharing circles. This work is done with the intention of helping students to feel supported and welcome at school while at the same time, nurturing mental health.
