My research specialties are methodology and theory, and fusing these to develop novel solution systems for complex problems that no existing framework can handle. Although I have preferences, I am generally application-agnostic and like to explore many different fields and applications.The research field I love the most is complex systems; it is crucially important to understand such systems, but work is still in its infancy. I like it because it combines philosophy, mathematics, computer simulation, and applications across disciplines. My primary research in methodology using statistics, agent-based modeling, and network theory stem from my interest in complex systems research. I am especially interested in core issues in complexity theory, system diversity, social polarization, belief measure interoperability, evolutionary algorithms, and Bayesian methods for modeling behavior.However, one needs to grow and develop new skills and adapt to changing needs and opportunities. Although complex systems had an upswing a little while back, AI and deep learning have stolen much of its thunder. As a result, much of my current work would be classified as AI in geospatial, network, and personal "Big Data" as well as recommender engines, computer vision, multisensor fusion, etc. I mean, with my background and a good python library I can run through just about any existing analysis needed for a problem, but I am more interested in expanding and creating AI methods than merely applying off-the-shelf solutions. The technical aspects of this work span many areas. Data collection of disparate data types (mostly in Japanese), intense cleaning, and data management systems (including graph databases). I need to identify and apply the appropriate analysis tools from data science, machine learning, network theory, and spatial analysis; and/or invent or adapt the needed methods when unavailable. I need to create efficient algorithms for extracting information from telemetry data; integrate multiple forms of data into coherent scoring methods, and design web applications with intuitive and responsive user interfaces for easy interaction by non-technical users.The work also includes novel research into accessibility, walkability, mobility, multiobjective and multimodal route optimization, conversational agents, recommender systems, spatial analysis, and other fields with regular publications. In addition to my direct responsibilities, I manage and consult other AI team members on a broad range of topics related to AI and data science. -

I develop new methods for discovering and measuring patterns in heterogeneous non-linear time-series data. We are integrating my analysis toolkit into an adaptive research environment of cognition studies that automates the collection and analysis of data, and utilizes an AI controller to change the cognitive tasks in response to performance. The primary goal is accelerate research into treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, although the individual modules have much further-ranging applications. -
