Salina Utah

ARCH Coal hired me for a summer internship to work with their water pump and survey crews at the SUFCO Coal mine near Salina Utah. I was given hands on experience operating heavy equipment underground to fix and install new water pumps, pipes, valves, pipe fittings and various other hydraulic tools and hardware. Working with the survey crew increased my knowledge and skills in mapping and surveying. I was the rod man for the senior surveyor Trent Brown. Trent also used me to help generate maps based on our survey measurements using Auto Cad.

Greater Salt Lake City Area

Under the supervision of the Director of Engineering Services for Kennecott Utah Copper I completed a draft of the Pre-Feasability and Feasibility study for the East Waste Rock Dump project, a report and list of all heavy equipment/machinery with automation potential on KUC land and a cost estimate/design for a road base plant. I was also given the opportunity to be involved with the planning for the in pit crusher and belt relocation. This was a fantastic opportunity to witness the strategic planning done by TAKRAF and the KUC team.

I performed gradations for all asphalt, concrete and road base aggregates. Through out the summer I was assigned to work with multiple paving crews testing the density of asphalt and working with U DOT to ensure our work was in accordance with state specifications.

I owned and operated a small Decorative Rock distribution company. It was the major way I earned money my junior year of high school in 2004 till I was married in 2010. I bought and paid for my own equipment, including a truck and trailer. Having the responsibility of operating a small business taught me the importance of being creative and thinking outside the box of normality. I learned how to sell, work with people, manage work orders and some basics in book keeping and finance.
