As an Assistant Design Engineer I help in the detailed review of complex track designs using 3D CAD software (Bentley Rail Track). This specifically applies to Absolute Track Geometry (ATG) routes where tilting vehicles operate at enhanced permissible speeds (EPS). The role also enables me to create plain line designs using an existing through alignment design (TAD) and reporting this against the surveyed track position using Excel macros created by myself.In additional to the above I am responsible for compiling survey and design information (Data Packs) for future use for track maintenance and renewal activities. This process has been streamlined using VBA macros I have created enabling one to automatically export the desired survey information by simply entering the ELR, track mileage and track ID. In September 2016 I started my role as a Trainee Track Design Engineer as part of the StarTrack scheme at Network Rail. The scheme included a mix of study and a work placement- I was based again with the Absolute Track Geometry Team in Milton Keynes. My roles and responsibilities remained similar to those I had as an intern, however I became move technically involved in the Conversion Process. My roles and responsibilities remained similar to those I had as an intern, however I became move technically involved in the Conversion Process. I was required to use the design tools within the BRT programme, using functions such as "Add Free Curve" and "Table Editor" to repair broken alignments. I ran all of the necessary reports and processed them in Excel with the aid of Macros created by my colleague. I also went to Rugby ROC to learn about maintenance design, and created my own. During my time on StarTrack I also spent 4 weeks on a placement in Watford Depot. In this time I partook in a number of different jobs, including site patrols, platform surveys, level 2 stressing and lifting and packing. Show less

During the summer following my GCSE exams I spent 8 weeks working at Network Rail as a Summer Intern. I returned the following Easter Holiday for 2 weeks and the following Summer for a further 12 weeks. During this time my role and responsibilities included learning about the railway and railway engineering and assisting with MX to Bentley Rail Track (BRT) file conversions. I sat with S&C (Switches and Crossings) Designers in Milton Keynes, learning about the functionalities of BRT (Bentley Rail Track) and how S&C works. I visited York Training Centre to learn about signalling. My time also included a site visit to a Plain Line BCS (Ballast Cleaner) Renewal in Tring. During the final 4 weeks of the internship I worked with the ATG (Absolute Track Geometry) Team on a project which included using MX Rail and BRT to convert design files from the MX Rail format to the BRT format. My main role was exporting geometry reports to be used for in Excel comparison tools. I also used the MTP Database (Managed Track Position) to retrieve information. Show less
