About Aaron Farrell
I am a recent PhD graduate with an extensive background in bioscience, biotechnology, and drug development, ready to transition into the industry. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Bio-Molecular Science & Drug Development with First-Class Honours, where I gained practical experience in diverse projects, including developing a novel platelet function test, investigating protease inhibitors for African sleeping sickness, and analysing miRNA impacts on the CHO cell proteome. My expertise spans core lab techniques such as cell culture, chromatography, PCR, and ELISA.My PhD research at Technological University Dublin focused on discovering and characterising novel antimicrobial peptides from plants. Using computational biology and experimental techniques, I optimised RNA extraction methods, constructed cDNA libraries, and developed PCR primers for defensin identification and gene expression analysis. Additionally, I established protocols for total protein extraction and purification from oil-based seeds, fine-tuning buffer compositions, cell lysis, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and desalting methods. This work involved testing novel plant antimicrobial peptides on bacteria, yeast, and fungi and conducting cytotoxicity testing on mammalian cells. I also constructed and optimised plasmids for expressing a novel plant defensin in E. coli, refining codon optimisation, transformation, translation, and His-Tag Ni-NTA purification for improved yield and purity. My project demonstrated the effectiveness of a multifaceted approach to identifying defensin-like peptides. It deepened my experience with data analytics tools like Knime, R, Microsoft Visual Studio, GraphPad Prism, and Minitab, along with bioinformatics tools, including BLAST and Hidden Markov Models for sequence and structure analysis. I am also skilled in protein homology modelling, docking, and QSAR analysis. As an adaptable and driven researcher, I am excited to apply my skills to advance scientific solutions in the biotech industry.

Upstream Process Development And Analytical Scientist Ii
Upstream Process Development And Analytical Scientist
Tutor/Senior Demonstrator
Postgraduate Researcher
My work focused on the computational identification and experimental characterisation of novel plant-derived, defensin-like proteins with antimicrobial activity. I integrated bioinformatics and QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) analysis to assess genetic sequences and predict bioactive peptides. Experimental validation was conducted through gene expression analysis (qRT-PCR), protein extraction, antimicrobial efficacy testing, and mammalian cytotoxicity assessment. This was followed by recombinant protein expression of the most potent plant peptide candidate.
Research Intern
Research Assistant
Project placement at the Royal college of Surgeons Beaumont working on the development of a novel platelet function test (platelet monitoring bio chip) to produce a cost effective, rapid, small volume platelet function assay which can detect the effect of multiple anti-platelet drugs in a single patient blood sample. The PMB assay was ran in parallel with the current gold standard, light transmission aggregometry assay. The project contained a detailed assessment and comparison of platelet function assay's performance as well as the performance of multiple anti-platelet therapies in cardiovascular disease patients
Bachelor Of Science (Bsc) Bio-Molecular Science
This course employed an interdisciplinary approach, providing me with theoretical and practical aspects of chemical, biochemical and microbiological analysis. Core Modules- Biochemistry, Molecular Immunology, Advanced Molecular Biology, Elective Modules- Bioprocessing, Drug DevelopmentAnalytical chemistry techniques:HPLC, GC, and other chromatographic techniques (affinity/ ion exchange). NMR, and fluorescence. Biological techniques:DNA extraction/purification, western blotting, electrophoresis, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, microscopy, bioassays, ELISA, PCR (RT-PCR/qPCR), flow cytometry, blood grouping, platelet function testing, genetic transformation, food sample analysis, bioreactor setup, and aseptic technique.
