I am currently in my final year of residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Over the year, with physiatrist Dr. Gregory Carter as my mentor, I worked on multiple reviews addressing the potential utility of cannabinoid medicines in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gherig's disease) and chronic pain syndromes. I also assisted with reviewing literature to contribute to a Cochrane review to address clinical guidelines for diagnosing and treating limb girdle muscular dystrophy.

Average Hours/Week: 20: This work involved analyzing upper limb kinematics and kinetics using motion capture data obtained from subjects propelling a manual wheelchair on an ergometer. The analysis was done on a learning data set from previously collected information, in an attempt to formulate a hypothesis addressing propulsion technique and minimization of chronic shoulder injuries.

Average Hours/Week: 40; This work was done to fulfill my requirement for an Individual Investigative Inquiry project at University of Washington School of Medicine. Funding was through the Medical Student Research Training Program at UW. The project consisted of developing and trying a brief intervention employing behavior change counseling and motivational interviewing in a randomized controlled trial. Outcomes involved influence of self efficacy of patients regarding diabetes self-care skills after discharge. My duties included learning and performing motivational interviewing, designing the project, subject recruitment and performing the intervention. At the end of the project, I was required to write a paper and present a poster.

Average Hours/Week: 40; This job required working in both pediatric and adult psychiatry wards. Duties included those of a general nurse's aide such as assisting patients with ADLs and monitoring safety of psychiatric patients. At times, I was involved in isolating or restraining patients following formal instruction in non-violent crisis intervention. A great deal of time was spent assisting with patient education. I also functioned as a unit clerk, performing clerical duties such as placing orders, answering phones and managing charts.

Average Hours/Week: 20; I worked as part of an educational team teaching small group tutorial sessions that served as the laboratory sections for College Physics I & II. Topics included mechanics, circuits, electric field and magnetic field physics. Other responsibilities includes exam grading and occasional individual tutoring upon request.

Chair of Student Health Advisory CommitteeAs chair of this committee, I was responsible for organizing monthly meetings of Student Health Clinic staff, participating MSU faculty and other student members. This position involved a lot of practice delegating tasks among student members taking part in subcommittees with purposes such as quality assessment and student body awareness of services. At one point, I led a project that consisted of developing a survey and collecting data from the student population regarding awareness and use of services. I was also involved in the selection process of a new physician by representing the student body in the interviewing process.

Average Hours/Week: 20; The purpose of this project was to determine differences in expression of Interleukin-6, based on variation in a polymorphism located in a gene promoter region, in response to delayed onset muscle soreness. Work employed several basic biochemistry laboratory methods, as well as a great deal of work with human subjects in a movement science laboratory. This work was done for credits toward my Bachelor's degree.

The main purpose of this position was to comfort patients and families in the emergency room and to assist nurses with cleaning and making beds, as well as running errands and transporting patients.

Average Hours/Week: 40: This research experience was done after receiving a stipend for summer research through the Complex Biological Systems Research Training Program at Montana State University. The project involved development of methods used to synthesize novel phosphorus-containing organic compounds. This included performing synthetic chemistry in a wet lab and elucidating structures of compounds using NMR spectroscopy.

Average Hours/Week: 15; This position entailed teaching an undergraduate anatomy & physiology recitation. Other responsibilities included grading students' homework and individual tutoring upon request.
