In my current role, I have brought my engineering and project management experience to the North to help with planning the servicing of medical equipment and projects to address clinical needs and challenges. I have learned so much about the challenges of healthcare for smaller, isolated healthcare facilities. As a graduate student at the University of British Columbia, I wanted to learn how I could leverage my background towards healthcare. I had the opportunity to sit in lectures from esteemed researchers on topics from challenges in the clinic to breakthroughs in medical technology. I took part in the Engineers -in-Scrubs program bringing engineers, clinical researchers, and clinicians together to innovate on specific challenges in the healthcare system. Through this I learned to observe, interview, and interact with clinicians to define, research, and implement a solution for tackling diabetic foot ulcers. As a group, we designed and tested a platform for early detection of foot ulcers.During my 16-month internship at Dow, I worked on an array of different projects from chemical injection skids to turbine piping to equipment foundations. I was able to bring two of these projects from the business planning stage to commissioning while progressing various others through the front-end loading and detailed design stages. After finishing my chemical engineering degree with great distinction, I wanted to expand my knowledge and network in the biotech space. I am now working on a research and development project where I am further implementing my experience in project management and design to develop a medical device.
