Dr. Aaron McClung is the Technology Manager for Thermal Management & Systems at GE Aviation Research in Niskayuna, NY. In this role, he leads a multi-disciplinary engineering team innovating new thermal management and systems technologies that are core to a wide range of aerospace applications including aircraft systems, avionics, gas turbines, and aerospace power generation. Dr. McClung has experience advancing low TRL fluid-thermal systems as applied to Thermal Energy Storage Systems, Closed Brayton Cycles, and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (sCO2) Power Cycles. Past roles include managing multi-disciplinary teams, leading the design and construction of first-of-a-kind systems, thermodynamic system modeling and optimization, and leading software development for custom and commercial engineering tools. Dr. McClung previously served dual roles as the Manager of the Power Cycle Machinery Section at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), and as SwRI's technical and programmatic lead for the design and construction of a 10 MWe power plant utilizing a Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (sCO2) Closed Brayton power cycle. The project team led by Dr. McClung advanced indirect, high temperature sCO2 power cycles through detail system design, component specification, controls system development, system hazard analysis, component procurements, facility design, construction, and initial system installation. This project was funded by the US DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory under the Supercritical Transformational Electric Power (STEP) program.
