For a wordsmith and communicator, one of the best ways to chip in to fight climate change is to tell the story of a forward-looking electric utility such as EWEB. As Oregon’s largest publicly owned electric utility, EWEB is a leader in delivering to customers electricity that is reliable, affordable and renewable. My goal is to tell that story to as wide.

In key ways, planning a podcast episode and writing a news article aren’t so different. Both require a motivating question. Both need brisk pacing and an overall narrative arc. Both are, at the core, stories. At the University of California, Irvine, I managed the UCI Podcast, growing my storytelling acumen in new ways. In each episode, I interviewed a UCI.

When I first pitched SeafoodSource in early 2017, I had little clue I would end up writing many dozens of articles about fisheries management, ocean science, sustainable seafood and emerging technologies, gaining deep knowledge about the fish and aquaculture space. Fishing is the last hunter-gatherer activity humans perform, and keeping fish populations.

You can take the journalist out of the newsroom, but you can't take the newsroom out of the journalist. Since leaving full-time newspapering in 2016, I've kept my writing and reporting skills sharp — pitching and writing for a diverse set of publications, including Civil Eats and Hakai, about fisheries, food, science and the environment.

My step up to UCI's Merage School marked my transition from primarily a content creator to primarily a content strategist. I oversaw storytelling strategy for owned and earned channels, setting up the communications best practices that advanced school goals. I launched an editorial calendar and hired and coached a writing intern, ultimately tripling.
