I am professionally licensed geotechnical engineer with over 15 years of civil engineering experience. Currently, I am a lecturer at Smith College in Northampton, MA. My PhD was completed in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where I collaborated with the Electrical Engineering, Geoscience, and Classics departments. I am a strong proponent of interdisciplinary teaching and research because working with other departments, particularly those outside the college of engineering, broadens my perspectives and provides new ideas for research and teaching. My research interests are primarily in resilient infrastructure, energy, and novel GPR applications with specific experience in the thermal conduction of soils, quantitative GPR data collection, in situ railroad testing, and dam safety. I enjoy traveling internationally both for professional conferences and personal exploration. My international experiences have given me new perspectives and context on what is possible. I have six years of consulting experience primarily in geotechnical site evaluations, foundation and earthworks design, HVAC geothermal applications, preparation of geotechnical contract documents, and construction observation. I try to incorporate my work, research, and life experiences into my classroom to ground my teaching to relatable examples.I also own a cheese and specialty food store with my wife Julia!
