Professor's Assistant, Technology Computer Studies / Information System Technology DivisionWhile a student at Hagerstown Community College, I had the opportunity to work as an assistant to Professor Karen D. Weil-Yates, who teaches several computer-related courses dealing with networking, hardware installation and troubleshooting, operating systems, and more. Before the semester began, myself and her two other student workers were to have three sets of 20 drives imaged via Microsoft's Deployment Kit, which included configuration of user accounts, ensuring all updates were downloaded and installed, and making sure the drives were in working order. Lab PCs were evaluated on a recurring basis to ensure functionality. This included making recommendations and performing various tasks such as installing hardware components, uninstalling drivers, troubleshooting, and general maintenance of the computers. Throughout the semester, I continued to accurately log and document any tests that were performed on various equipment and newly purchased products, determining and verifying that the devices functioned and logging steps taken to resolve any issues for future use. There are specific logs that were kept, and another general monthly task log that was edited by each of us to keep one another in the loop of what had been done, what needed to be done, and other tasks to perform each day we came in to work. I coordinated with the professor at times in order to research specific equipment and replacement materials needed. Other tasks included completing additional maintenance, including the availability of lab station materials, verifying update completion, maintaining inventory, keeping log files up-to-date, as well as any other requests made by the professor.

In conjunction with Hagerstown Community College's Internship course, I further expanded my pursuit of applying my gained knowledge within the information technology field by joining Innovative Inc. as an intern during the summer semester of 2017. I was responsible for executing requests upon bulk PC preparation orders, such as installing a preferred operating system on the computer without any included bloatware, installing software applications such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Reader, running batch files sometimes in order to install these programs in bulk, and ensuring that the machine was in working order. Sometimes the request would include installing hardware as well, such as RAM or graphics cards. I would then repackaged the PCs and they would be taken by the field service team to be setup and deployed in the client's workspace. For a large part of my internship, I was a member of the helpdesk team. This included taking calls requesting either verbal or remote support, dealing with Internet connection issues, display issues, application troubles, error messages, anti-virus updates, etc. I was also responsible for conducting triage of the ticketing system - ensuring that the ticket was received and that the client was aware of this, forwarding the request to the right person, and making sure the ticket's configuration was correct. After completing 60 hours in conjunction with HCC's Internship Course, Innovative elected to have me continue working part-time until the fall 2017 semester began.

As a high school student of Washington County, I was able to complete my Student Service Learning (SSL) hours at The Herald-Mail, assisting in capturing footage, preparing interview questions, transcribing audio, editing film, and writing articles. A small group of myself and a few others comprised the "Pulse Team", led by Lifestyle Editor, Crystal Schelle. The Pulse Team is "a program open to high school students interested in pursuing journalism". This opportunity allowed me to delve more into journalism, which I certainly enjoyed and would not mind revisiting at some point.

While conducting my first internship at B&D Consulting, I gained valuable knowledge and skills that have proved to translate in my later pursuit of education and work. I began my time there by researching and performing research concerning Symantec's Security Defense System. Utilizing VMware and other VM technologies, the team I was involved in would test the defense system by creating rules on an Active Directory server, and intentionally breaking them on the Virtual Machines connected to it, and viewing and documenting the results. I assisted in the bulk installation of Linux/UNIX operating systems on several machines. I also assisted in the preparation work for a convention that B&D was represented in, to help create a small, portable cloud environment. I was given the opportunity to pursue an internship while a senior at Washington County Technical High School due to my being able to take and pass the CCENT Certification Exam, along with my classmate, Andrew Boram.
