Mar 2018 - Nov 2018

Paralegal

This was a broad role and covered multiple disciplines. I was in charge of research and updates on case law and emerging thinking within the areas of competition law and regulation. These were skills I was well equipped with from my degree and it gave me an appreciation for broader "niche" aspects of law and a proficiency in the use of the online tools and databases to access them. It also honed my ability to summarise large texts down to their key points and prepare effective briefs. I was a facilitator for the legal team in meetings and I scheduled legal team events in house and off-site throughout the year. This required the ability to manage deadlines, balance the interests of multiple parties, clearly communicate the important aspects of the meetings and keep everyone in the loop and the ability to manage and influence opinions of multiple parties to come to a satisfactory compromise. My role also extended to procurement. Procurement of services is a very important and technical part of the business of Public Bodies. I had to learn the intricacies of the tender process and in my time there was heavily involved in the organisation, notification and evaluation stages of a tender to create a number of panels of legal service providers. I was also regularly involved in organising contracts with legal service providers drawing down from existing panel agreements. I was involved in large team-wide (or even organisation-wide) projects and often took the lead as project manager on many legal and administrative initiatives. All of these jobs required an ability to effectively communicate with my manager, with external stakeholders and to manage my own workload as well as those of project participants. This gave me an appreciation for professional communication, the art of project management, the determination and cooperation required to overcome significant hurdles, and the way to effectively utilise the resources and skills of the team for a project.

Jun 2014 - Mar 2018

Senior Staff Writer

University College Dublin

In this role I stepped back from being a section editor and instead was relied upon to make sure articles were never dropped to the detriment of the paper. I had to commit to an amount of content for an issue and meet it as a backstop measure against one or two pieces not coming in on time and having blank spaces in the paper. I was also given minor editorial work to ease the office burden. This required time commitment and skill in writing and brainstorming content ideas with the editorial team so there was always something to fill gaps. It required initiative and determination.

Jul 2015 - Aug 2016

Section Editor - Film And Tv

University College Dublin

Within the confines of one newspaper cycle, I decided on theme and content of the section for each issue, collaboratively worked with writers to nail down the concepts for pieces we both wanted written, then edited and published their work online and in print. To do so I had to manage a team, engage with Public Relations personnel to organise interviews, screenings, press passes and materials, and ensure their needs were balanced with those of the paper. I also had to meet deadlines and be a proficient writer and editor.

Aug 2014 - Jul 2015

Intern

Dublin

My day to day duties here were meeting clients and managing their expectations, offering them general advice for engaging with a solicitor's firm, managing the calendars of the solicitor's in house, organising the presence of barristers at cases around the country, taking notes in court, managing large amounts of documentary evidence, organising and carrybing out prison visits, researching and offering summaries on case law for use in early stage negotiations and with regard to Discovery applications. I also handled day to day Administrative and filing work under the guidance of the front of house staff.
