About Aaron True Ph.D.
I'm passionate about fluid mechanics research and education. My research leverages experimental and computational fluid dynamics to study transport and dispersion phenomena in diverse biologically inspired contexts. I serve as an independent and collaborative researcher, co-advisor to three PhD students, data curator and lab manager, PhD committee member, and adjunct instructor. My research efforts contribute to the Odor2Action Network, a $20M+ NSF NeuroNex project dedicated to olfaction that brings together an interdisciplinary team of investigators from 16 universities in the US, UK, and Canada. Current research projects are related to plume dispersion and information content in odor landscapes, engineered and biological chemical sensing modalities, olfactory navigation in complex environmental flows, and big data curation. I serve as co-PI on a US Department of Defense sponsored contract studying plume dispersion from improvised explosive devices and play a central or supporting role in the conceptual development of several collaborative research proposals.Environmental, ecological, and biological fluid mechanics: turbulence, scalar mixing and dispersion, viscous and intermediate Reynolds number flows, biophysical interactions, aquatic ecology, terrestrial olfaction, bio-inspired designExperimental and computational fluid mechanics, physical and numerical modeling, particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), high-speed imaging, FEM/CFDDesign, fabrication, and validation of experimental facilities and techniques for investigation of environmental and ecological flow problems: custom flume systems (shear flows, stratified systems, turbulence, inhalant flows), PIV and LIF systems, mechanical/electronic/optical system integration and synchronization for data acquisitionTechnical and computational proficiency: COMSOL, MATLAB, working knowledge of C++, NI LabVIEW, AutoCAD/SolidWorks, LaTex, Adobe Illustrator & Premiere Pro, numerous other software packages (creative, statistical, modeling, digital image/video processing).Proven and effective technical communication skills honed through technical presentations at international scientific conferences, teaching/lecturing/advising, and peer-reviewed publishingComprehensive multidisciplinary experience working with teams of engineers, biologists, ecologists, oceanographers, and neuroscientistsConsiderable experience training, supervising, mentoring, and advising a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate researchers in engineering and biology
