Senior Software Engineer Lead - Platform Health

I am a lead on the Fundamentals team inside of the Operating Systems groups at Microsoft, responsible for on/off performance along with customer satisfaction investigations related to performance, power, and reliability. My team started out in this role looking into other competing platforms across the OS space to understand how Windows compares, and then moved on to two major projects: Implementation of a Profile Guided Optimization harness to collect daily training data for the Windows Mobile SKU, and investigations into the performance differences and expectations for customers upgrading from Win7/ Win8 / Win 8.1 to Windows 10 v10240. Our work was used to ensure that we upgraded customers in a manner such that they did not see a drop in perceived performance, and worked to identify blocking issues for other users to be investigated and prioritized. After the initial wave of Windows 10 upgrades, we continue to model users perception of performance vs. the underlying quantitative engineering data being returned via telemetry to understand how better to prioritize our engineering investments. We also took on increasing portions of the power transition performance space, and worked to fix bugs and improve the performance of boot, shutdown, connected standby entrance and exit, unlock, face unlock, and many other scenarios via a set of techniques from pure bug fixing, to memory standby list prioritization and organization, to PGO being used during compliation, to reference set analysis and code removal to decrease storage resource costs during these scenarios. We also built and run a service that analyzes daily traces from all 300+ builds of Windows each day to automatically flag new performance regressions in these scenarios.

Senior Test Lead - Windows Server Performance

My team wrote and ran the automation services that provided daily performance data for critical Windows Server workloads, which we used to both improve the total throughput of these roles (think IIS web server or HyperV running multiple VMs), and to test and find bugs at the outer limits of the scale that Windows Server supports. At the time, we had the lab where we tested the 2TB limit of memory for Server 2012, as well as various NUMA configurations including HPs custom 8-way north+south hemisphere DL 980s.

Test lead for Windows Deployment Services (WDS), and PXE based network boot provider that ships as a Windows Server role. WDS originally shipped as a standalone package for Server 2003, and then was included in box for Server 2008. As part of the 2008 and 2008R2 release, we added support for multicast deployments utilizing two custom protocols loosely based on PGM, developed in partnership with Microsoft Research. We also greatly increased the scalability of the PXE server and the TFTP server used to download the initial boot files, with part of the TFTP scale improvements coming from additions on top of RFC 1350. As part of this, I performed a varitiy of activities, from debugging client and server side code, to authoring UI automation on top of our MMC snap ins, to running selfhost servers across Microsofts corporate network for OS dogfooding, to providing training and presentations to Microsoft MVPs, OEMs, and ODMs on WDS technology (at the time, many factory floor processes utilized WinPE based OS deployments during manufacturing.) Between the 2008 and the 2012 release of Windows Server, we greatly increased the efficiency of the multicast server, reduced the block size defaults to work around networking hardware limitations, worked with hardware vendors to fix bugs in IGMPv2 and v3, and fixed many memory leaks and other code cleanliness issues to greatly improve the reliability of the service.Additionally, helped plan and write validation for sever assessments in the ADK for Win8 to validate performance on OEM images for the new start menu, web browser performance, and the streaming media platform.
