About Aaron Watt
My passion is to help our community and society understand the choices we face for our natural resources. My goal is to do that as a university professor, being able to both support students through teaching and mentoring, and to support our decision-makers through research on environmental policies.Teaching:I get so excited when a student begins to understand a concept, and I love being able to translate from technical jargon into "student speak" using analogies. I value the time and energy that students put into their education, and by supporting a well-rounded and thorough experience, I believe we can cultivate the next generation of passionate, objective, and extraordinary economists. Research:Research is an important part of academic discourse, and just like a policy debate, it is important to consider the reasons and implications for using certain tools (using one model over another, or making assumptions about the data used). Being able to explain those reasons and results to a non-academic audience is just as crucial if any of our thoughtful analysis is going to be put into action. Throughout my undergraduate experience, I worked with Professor David McIntyre, Professor Janet Tate and the Tate research group at Oregon State University to help characterize Zinc Sulfide thin films. As part of the team, I optically analyzed the films, including simple reflection and transmission (R&T) measurements, ellipsometry, and computer analysis of the data to extract thickness and refractive index. A comparison of the simple R&T technique with the study of ellipsometry was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of the department's own R&T equipment compared to the Materials Science department's ellipsometry equipment.
