As a member of the Container Runtime team, I am expected to possess a high level of expertise with runtimes such as Docker and containerd, including the underlying anatomy of a container. In addition to my continued stewardship of our existing Nagios deployment, I was responsible for modernizing our monitoring infrastructure and processes. This involved preparing presentations, working closely with various stakeholders in IT Operations and Engineering, managing vendor relationships, and implementing proof-of-concept deployments for Sensu (on-premises), Sysdig, Datadog, OpsGenie, PagerDuty, and VictorOps (SaaS).

As manager of the evening team (three NOC administrators), I managed scheduling, hiring, and training for my shift. I also acted as the primary NOC technical contact with other groups during new game and service rollouts, writing new custom monitoring checks in Python or Bash as needed. Lastly, I revised the NOC workflow for managing Nagios configuration files in Git from pushing everything to the master, to using a more traditional GitHub workflow with branches, pull requests, and peer reviews.

In addition to day-to-day duties, I wrote more than 25 custom Nagios plugins during my time in this role, covering everything from time-series data queries and analysis (via Graphite API), a generic Elasticsearch query check, and several vendor-specific HTTP(S) API checks. I also rewrote our e-mail notification script for greater resiliency and extensibility.

In this role, I employed Splunk and Consul/Serf to monitor service health and observe usage statistics. I also helped maintain the CMDB and knowledge base (ServiceNow) to ensure that information was current and accurate.
