I help support public and private sector clients with integrated water resources management objectives, including the preparation and implementation of Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) in response to the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). I specialize in the application of data science and statistical methods to inform hydrogeologic investigations, policy design, and strategic management initiatives. My responsibilities include leading the development of integrated numerical hydrologic, groundwater flow and solute transport models and accompanying Decision Support Tool platforms. I also have extensive experience providing litigation support services related to water supply and quality.

I applied microfluidics and microscopy techniques to study adhesive properties and characterize surface functionalities of waterborne pathogenic eggs for detection and wastewater treatment applications. I developed a novel technique for in-situ concentration and quantification of viable Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in environmental and wastewater samples, including fabrication of surface-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for rapid egg concentration in aqueous mediums.

I designed a novel optical, photogrammetry, and image processing method to create georectified thermal orthophotos of apparent ground temperature for use in calculating calculate total radiant heat emissions in volcanic and hydrothermal systems. As part of my research, I developed 3D thermal orthophotos and calculated total radiant heat emissions at the Mammoth Mountain Fumarole and Hot Creek Geologic Site in Mammoth Lakes, CA. I presented the results of these efforts at American Geophysical Union conference (2014) and published my findings to the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (Lewis et al., 2015, Lewis et al., 2020).

I designed and conducted flow-through column experiments to analyze the effects of physical heterogeneities on reactive contaminant transport in saturated hydraulic systems, including Chromium (VI) mobilization. I modeled and visualized Cr(VI) mobilization kinetics under a variety of sediment geometry and permeability distributions. I presented my results at the American Geophysical conference (2013).
