My name is Aaron Smith. As a recent PhD graduate from the University of Guelph, I am seeking opportunities to apply the wide-ranging skill set that I have developed. My research was focused on studying the structure and properties of molecular crystals based on short chain peptides. Here are some highlights from my PhD: 💊 Analyzed 40+ new crystal structures including ones containing vitamin B3 and pyrazinamide, a TB medication.My research focused on the research and development of new co-crystals and inclusion compounds between peptides and a range of small molecules. Overall 40+ new co-crystals / inclusion compounds were successfully crystallized and studied using PXRD and single crystal X-ray diffraction, resulting in one of the largest contributions in the field to date. 📊 Gained experience in the development of new tools and methodologies from scratch.Several key trends were established through the rigorous analysis of these new structures. This research was only made possible due to my development of new tools and overall methodology which better described and compared the structures. 🔥 Utilized thermal and spectroscopic techniques to relate features of the crystal structures to physical properties like thermal stability. My research also explored the connection between the 3D structure and physical properties of the new materials. By utilizing TGA-FTIR as well as GC-MS analysis, the ability to tune the thermal properties of the materials through the selection of different peptide lengths and/or side chains was demonstrated. 💻 Software administrator for the universities X-ray facility and developed custom python scripts to aid in data analysis.Throughout my thesis, my passion for technology was a huge asset. After demonstrating my ability to build, setup and maintain multiuser computer systems, I was given the responsibility of being the software administrator for the universities X-ray facility. This passion also allowed me to quickly master new programs, easy troubleshoot software and hardware issues with our machines and led me to developing custom python scripts to streamline data analysis.
