Sr. Development Specialist
Sr. Development Specialist Adsorption
Senior Process Engineer
-Utilized adsorption modelling to evaluate new adsorbents and their potential impact on direct air capture (DAC) process performance-Managed external collaborations and internal efforts to collect fundamental adsorption data-Evaluated experimental data to guide the development of adsorption process models-Directed testing and operation of direct air capture (DAC) pilot plant to optimize process performance using novel materials
Development Specialist
- Lead the development and commercialization of a state-of-the-art PSA prepurifier adsorbent - Designed and operated PSA cycles for air prepurification, hydrogen purification, and syngas purification using a pilot scale process - Challenged conventional modeling methods to improve PSA prepurifier simulation accuracy - Contributed to projects involving air prepurification, CO2 drying, syngas purification, syngas drying, and nitrogen rejection- Analyzed breakthrough data to determine kinetic parameters for adsorbents in purification and bulk separations- Provided functional designs for TSA and PSA prepurifiers to support proposals and active projects- Collaborated with operations team to provide guidance on improving plant performance or increasing plant productivity- Conducted extensive PSA process modeling to support projects related to air prepurification and syngas drying/purification- Developed and taught an “Adsorption Master Class” on adsorption fundamentals, adsorbents, and adsorption processes
Graduate Research Assistant
Research areas- Investigated differences between rapid pressure swing adsorption (RPSA) and PSA and what phenomenon determines operating limits of RPSA processes. - Developed RPSA modeling techniques to improve RPSA simulation accuracy.- Determined kinetic parameters of small diameter particles using a breakthrough system.- Collaborated with my adviser on the development and testing of a prototype medical oxygen concentrator (MOC).- Designed and experimentally verified potential cycles for a MOC using a pilot scale PSA process. - Measured and modeled pure component isotherms of various adsorbent materials using a Rubotherm magnetic suspension balance. - Ion exchange on ETS-10 to determine its effect on adsorption properties.- Crystallization and characterization of a novel hydrogen bonded framework (HOF).
Graduate Teaching Assistant
- Supervised and directed students in a unit operations course on safely collecting and analyzing data from lab equipment including pilot scale distillation and absorption towers.- Instructed in both the classroom and lab environment on concepts related to fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, fuel cells and separation processes.
R&D Intern: Air Prepurification
- During my summer assignment, I investigated novel cycles for PSA and TSA prepurifiers using Aspen Adsorption and delivered operating ranges for future pilot scale testing. I was also responsible for using the model to provide guidance on troubleshooting future plant problems.- The second part of my assignment was to research and develop a new mass transfer model to improve the existing PSA prepurifier model. This required analyzing pilot plant data and understanding and resolving differences between the data and model predictions.
Lercip Internship
As lead intern on a cryogenic propellant storage scaling study, my duties included collaborating with the other two interns on the project and managing the improvement and expansion of a program to serve as the study’s primary analysis tool. Through a creative approach to the program’s design and teamwork with the other interns, I was successfully able to produce a more visually impressive and user friendly tool with increased functionality. This included integrating several analysis tools together in a graphical user interface (GUI) using Visual Basic for Applications in Microsoft Excel to expand the ability of the tool to study long term cryogenic fuel storage.
Lercip Internship
My responsibility as part of the Cryogenic Propellant Storage and Transfer project was to run simulations using thermal models in order to conduct parametric analysis on a cryogenic fuel storage tank under development for a ground-flight test. From the analysis, I would provide solutions on how to minimize the mass and power requirements for the storage tank. The project was highly important to NASA Glenn and eventually won the annual award for best small team project at the Center.
Lercip Internship
My assignment was in a Lean Direct Injection (LDI) combustion test facility, which provided hands-on experience with the piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) and process equipment. It was my job to determine the sections in the system that needed safety checks before the facility could become operational. This allowed me to then help author a customer guide for potential clients that identified the capabilities of the facility.
